The year 2013 being an anniversary year of the births of both Wagner and Verdi, the former composer is receiving a great deal of activity in terms of new releases and reissues, a process started in 2012 with the Pentatone Janowski series and the beautiful Solti presentation set and continuing with the glamorous reissue of the Janowski Dresden set remastered by Sony , the completion of the new Janowski series with the release of a new Ring, and a Gergiev Ring cycle under way to be completed in 2014. The Ring is the bedrock of any Wagner collection, and I propose to tackle this review primarily as my advice to a reader looking to buy their first or only cycle-and at the asking price this set is a candidate! There can be no doubting the prodigious musical talents of Barenboim, but he does not always convince me as a conductor, and I don't care for more of his recordings than I admire-but then the same applies to Solti, and I LOVE his Ring recordings! At its best, Barenboim's Wagner is superb as his Parsifal demonstrates, as does his Tristan to a lesser extent, and for much of this Ring he conducts with sensible tempi, excellent dramatic flow and balances the forces well-but on too many occasions he suddenly changes temp mid-bar, slows down for no apparent reason, whips the tempo up again.. and then continues sensibly! Some big moments-Siegfried's Funeral March for example, lack impact and are suddenly rushed through and this irritates me in particular-it's a trait he displays in his later Wagner recordings too-but overall it is a fine achievement and infinitely preferable to the perfunctory conducting of Janowski for example.
Technically this is the best recorded Ring of all, though that may well change when the SACD versions of forthcoming cycles appear.

In Rheingold Fricka's beautiful line to Wotan, "Why do you wait, Wotan?" is inaudable. track 19. Too bad, otherwise remarkable, get it.

Glorius sound, sound cast.

Maybe the best ring period.

HASH(0x94572a98) out of 5 stars Great modern Ring! 13 Jun. 2011

This recording has it all. Great overall performance, start to finish. It has aspects of both the best studio as well as live recordings of this work. Recorded "live" in the festival hall (no audience was present), you get the experience of hearing a live performance. You can actually hear the onstage action, but unlike many real live recordings, it is not obtrusive, and there is no coughing and hacking! Like a studio recording, the sound is exceptionally clean and detailed. Barenboim and the orchestra are superb. You get the best of both worlds, with possibly the best modern cast. Possibly (but hopefully not) the last truly great festival cast ever; putting together an ensemble of singers of this calibre is going the way of the dodo. Jerusalem (Siegfried) is fantastic. Tomlinson (Wotan) is awesome. Clark is my personal favorite Mime of any recording I have; suitably avaricious and cranky. All the other roles are filled exceptionally. I give this 5 stars because I have so many "4 star" modern recordings - Janowski, Solti, von Karajan, Sawallisch. And this one is easier on the ears than some of the 5-star mono classics - Keilberth, Krauss, Knappertsbusch, Furtwangler. The best place to start for Ring newbies, and a fantastic addition for the seasoned Ring addict!

HASH(0x9392cf54) out of 5 stars Astounding. 2 Jun. 2013

If I were to choose two complete "Ring Cycles," I'd pick Bernard Haitink's as a studio recording, and Barenboim's as a live recording. Both are incredible. Barenboim's is recorded live at Bayreuth, but without an audience, so there isn't a lot of coughing, etc., and even the stage noise is minimal. The acoustics at Bayreuth will leave you breathless. The orchestra is glorious throughout, and if there's a complaint it doesn't have to do with the orchestra, but the way the singers were miked: In "Die Walkure," every time a singer turns away from what must be a directional mike, the voice fades and the orchestra appears too loud. This problem is addressed in the other operas.

What can I say about this "Ring's" singing? That the singing is so good that it's classic in many roles. John Tomlinson makes a terrific Wotan, Graham Clark as both Loge and as Mime is simply awesome. His voice reflects the characters' thoughts exactly. Poul Elming suffers only from the directional mike issue mentioned earlier, but apart from that his Siegmund is wonderfully beautiful, not a yell at all. Nadine Secunde as Sieglinde is also marvelously expressive, and well paired with Elming. Anne Evans as Brunhilde is at her first entrance a bit too light in tone: It sounds as though she came onstage without warming up. But this passes, and what is wonderful - and unique - about her Brunhilde throughout the whole cycle is her lighter, more lyrical singing of the role than I've ever heard. It's really wonderful. And all of Brunhilde sounds easy for her, full of expression.

This recording is also the best I've heard Siegfried Jerusalem sing, as an awe-inspiringly beautiful Siegfried. He's still fresh in voice, extremely expressive, and the rigors of "Siegfried" don't affect him at all. It sounds easy for him. Same in "Gotterdammerung." The recording is worth it just for that singing alone. I venture to say that, much to my shock, Jerusalem surpasses even Lauritz Melchior in the role, no mean feat!

In all, this recording deserves its 5 stars. And I'm gladdened to have a "modern" recording of the Ring that surpasses the old, classic recordings of Melchior and Flagstad, for example. It is a wonderful experience.

HASH(0x9392d1d4) out of 5 stars One of the great Rings of recent years, from Barenboim 25 Jan. 2011
By Autonomeus - Published on Amazon.com
I've had this box for several years now, and I am reviewing it on the occasion of my first live Wagner opera -- I saw the Met HD Live broadcast of DAS RHEINGOLD recently, with Bryan Terfel as Wotan, an incredible production and performance, with the indefatigable James Levine!

I gradually worked my way up to a complete recording of The Ring, starting with a 2-disc set of highlights from Bohm live at Bayreuth in 1967, and then listening to the four 1-disc highlights of Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Gotterdammerung from this cycle, Barenboim recorded at Bayreuth in 1991/92.

After familiarizing myself with Wagner's soundworld, reading about Wagner, particularly Bryan Magee's excellent The Tristan Chord: Wagner and Philosophy, and investigating the various options for a complete Ring Cycle, I decided on this Barenboim box.

While I tend to listen to the four highlights discs from this set rather than the entire operas, it is great to have for occasional listening. Unfortunately the reissue does not contain the entire libretto, as did the original box, which is a major drawback.

Still, I recommend it without reservation to anyone interested in hearing Wagner's Ring!

HASH(0x9392d150) out of 5 stars A Virgin to the Nibelungen...No More! 15 Nov. 2011

After years of reading about it. After all the reviews and opinions (both positive and negative). I decided that I could no longer ignore the gravitational pull of Wagner's epic. I am by no means an opera connoisseur. I am however a music lover. I can't imagine living my entire life without hearing the complete Ring Cycle at least once. I ended up choosing Der Ring under the direction of Daniel Barenboim for a few reasons. Quality and value were the driving force for this first-time listener. I'm not qualified to deconstruct this version versus other Ring recordings. I will simply say...I loved this widely praised Ring production. The performances and live feel of the recording are amazing. The packaging is slick. My only complaints and the reasons I didn't give this box set the 5 stars it deserves is the absence of the libretto. To solve this problem I purchased the book by Stewart Spencer which is an amazing German to English translation of the full libretto. There are 14 CDs housed in this box set. When I started importing them into my I-Tunes I discovered the disks are not consistently labeled. I found myself having to re-label most of the CDs...But these are minor quibbles. Overall this is a fantastic starting point into Wagner's musical world.

HASH(0x9497c12c) out of 5 stars This cycle has lost its allure over the intervening years since its initial release. 23 July 2014
By pekinman - Published on Amazon.com
I have commented on each of these four Ring operas in this cycle individually so I will not go into much detail here.

There is no reason to buy this Ring cycle unless you want John Tomlinson's Wotan which is not available anywhere else on record. If you want Bayreuth live and don't mind a truly 'live' event with audience coughing (but not very much) and not nearly so much stage noise as you find on this Teldec set, I recommend Karl Böhm's cycle with the Eternal Birgit Nilsson's greatest recording of Brünnhilde and a supporting cast almost equal to her genius. And the sound is far more listenable than Teldec's harsh, loud and poorly balanced effort for Barenboim. And Böhm is leagues above Barenboim as a conductor of this composer's masterpieces.

There are two fine performances here, however, both from the lead tenors, Siegfried Jerusalem (Siegfried) and Poul Elming (Siegmund). There is also a magnetic Waltraute in Götterdämmerung from Waltraud Meier, though she is very acid sounding due to the poor engineering and is heard to much better effect on Haitink's studio set on EMI and best of all on Sawallisch's live set from Munich, also on EMI. None of the other of Barenboim's principals rise much above the mundane, and one of them, Anne Evans, is so over-parted as to be embarrassing, though she has a pretty voice and obviously can act, she is not a Brünnhilde.

John Tomlinson is a famous Wotan/Wanderer, but here he sounds woofy and shouty, strained on the top and weak on the bottom, but still an impressive performance. He makes a strong impression due almost solely on the power and amplitude of his huge voice and his intelligent conveyance of the text. He responds well to Küpfer's Brechtian approach to opera direction. A very rough and gruff god. He's a great Hagen, though, on Haitink's fine EMI set and should have been Barenboim's Hagen as well, but there it is.

Barenboim's conducting is self-indulgent, erratic and often lost at sea, changing tempos in the middle of bars, losing his singers, and causing confusion between pit and stage.

I give this Ring two stars on the merits of the outstanding performances by Jerusalem and Elming, and the chorus and orchestra.
