So when this set appeared and dropped to a reasonable price, i took a punt on it and bought it. And I have to say I am quite impressed with what I have seen.
First of all, the wrestling has not aged badly at all. Given that some of these matches are over 30 years old, you would think that the moves performed in the ring would look dated, but they still hold up to today's standard. This is in part helped by the fact that a good portion of this matches are fairly short, running between 5 and 10 mins long (Some are longer). This is because the purpose of some of the TV matches was to get people to buy tickets to go to the arenas and see these men live.
The format of the feature is different to the usual offering. This is not a linear progression of the events of Mid South. Instead it is a look at the wrestlers who plied their trade there. So for example, there are several features with Ted Dibiase, interviews with him, then some of his matches with Hacksaw Jim Duggan or Paul Orndorf. This makes a pleasant change and makes this set stand out, as well as giving us more information. I can't help thinking that they did this due to the fact that a lot of Mid South was not tapped (There is no PPV after all), but it works.
All in all this is a good set, and defintely worth buying if your a fan of Pro Wrestling
The format is unlike previous territory releases as this has no lengthy documentary detailing the promotions highs and lows. What you do get is a history of the territory from 1981-1987 by the wrestlers themselves, featuring short narratives followed by a vintage match.
Bill Watts could boast a who's who of talent in his wrestlers achievements. Virtually every face in this DVD has made a huge impact in the 1980's in North American wrestling. The DVD cover shows Ted DiBiase, Junkyard Dog and Jake Roberts, but that doesn't even scratch the surface of the 'Legends' included here.
My only gripe is that the lighting of the ring during the odd match appears a touch on the dull side, but that is my only complaint. The Blu-ray extras featured are very good also. If you possess the curiosity to know where some of the greatest wrestlers from the NWA/WCW or the WWF/WWE previously made a name, then this is the DVD for you. It really is that good.
The wrestling is a tad rough and ready for several matches (JYD was AWFUL in the ring, frankly!) but there's talent to be found from technicians like Dibease and others. The crowds are almost manic at times. No wonder Jim Cornette yearns for the 'good old days' of wrestling to return.
