I was somewhat nervous about this My Cloud NAS as reviews are mixed. A bullet proof solution seems to be Synergy, but they are a lot more expensive so I took the plunge – and, so far, most is very good. It works, out of the box – just follow the relatively simple instructions. The Web browser app to access the drive and setup new folders, users, security, passwords, and mobile (cloud) access is really easy and simple. A little technical knowledge is useful but not necessary. It works (so far) very well with my SONOS system (one of the reasons I bought it after an Iomega NAS drive failed without warning) – even coming alive very quickly (<10 secs) if in sleep mode.
Even though I keep other backups, with a RAID1 setup this is extra security for all those family pictures and videos. These are priceless, so this is another good feature which I didn’t have on the Iomega – but I did have backups (how many people are going to lose their life record because they don’t backup!). Recently we had a momentary power failure (I know because the web browser app told me) and on booting up again it automatically re-built one of the drives – so no reason to think on a drive failure this wouldn’t work.
File transfer over a wired network (to restore my precious photos, music etc.) was at around 8Mbs – so not fast, but OK. I’ve not had any problems with reading data.
Two areas that are not so good – the WD Smartware backup software bundled with it is shockingly slow – in fact unusable, but I would use Windows backup instead. Also Windows 7 and Vista on booting up sometimes ask for a login and password to access drives (even though there is no password on the drive) – this may be a Windows issue rather than WD.

I love this idea, but it's several years ahead of its time. The technology simply isn't fast enough to support it.
I've managed to complete 2 back-ups of my 1TB MacBook Pro and both of these had to be done with a direct, wired connection.
I completed the first of over 700GB before leaving on an extended business trip. When I returned, the updated back-up was about 65GB. After several HOURS, all of 100MB had been completed! I cancelled the back-up, connected with a wire and the device commenced a new, full back-up, which lasted around a day. Not so much Thunderbolt as Trickle.
To be honest, the wired back-up operates at about the speed I'd expect wirelessly. (The problem isn't my internet connection as, with the latest wireless back-up running, I've just downloaded a 1GB file in 8 minutes). The current back-up is under 26GB, which should take under 3.5 hours at the speed I can obtain in the example above. It's been running for over 8 hours and has completed under 168MB!

Setting up is just a case of connecting to your router powering up and it will become part of your network. Installation of the Windows setup will give online access and you are prompted to register and create a password. Once the software is installed you can right click in the system tray and access what Western Digital call "Dashboard". At this point you are presented with a dialogue to log in with the default user name as "admin". The password box is empty and I thought the password I had created at registration would be the obvious choice. This doesn't work and all the usual default passwords for a NAS system didn't work either. Reading the online manual you find that the default password is just left blank and you can just press Enter. (a later firmware update will state this in the password box).
The default condition is Raid 1 so a 4TB NAS gives 2TB of storage.
All went well as I uploaded about 30 GB of Data which took about an hour.
The next day on powering up, the Power LED which had been blue during previous use was flashing Yellow. Page 8 of the manual say that the Front Panel LED flashing yellow is the device powering up or in the process of updating the firmware or if not this a network cable has become unplugged. I had updated the firmware and waited 30 minutes.
I tried reconnecting and even replacing the ethernet cable but hours later it was still flashing yellow.
Accessing the Dashboard a red error message reported "One or more Raid Volumes are degraded" and the report that the Raid 1 was rebuilding and progress was 0% and 203 minutes. This has been like that for 2 days with Auto rebuild selected to ON.
A Restart or a Reboot is not an option during rebuilding and I have tried the usual "turn it off, wait and turn it on again.

Terrible device, slow, issue connecting and the user interface is very restrictive. I've now had four variations of this MyCloud Device and it was so slow it was untrue. The Dashboard software which access the drives is very 'Big Brother' esque in that it won't let you do anything WD don't want you to do (Much Like Apple). It comes with a 'Public' Folder pre-setup as part of the dashboard and whether you want this folder or not you get it, you can't remove it, rename it, nothing. When I googled how to get rid of it I found A LOT of people are having the same issues.

I was constantly having access issues with these drives, it kept assigning itself a new IP and so I then couldn't access it. I had to contact WD Customer Support Many Many times over these drives and the best they could come up with was that the drives were faulty (Four faulty version of this drive - really??)

Even when I could access the drives (using WD Red internal HDDs) they were constantly slow and made my system hand all the time.

I now have a SYNOLOGY DiskStation DS215j 2 Bay Desktop Network Attached Storage system and the interface and general operation is streets ahead of WD. The dashboard is better. The operation is better and quieter and they stay a lot cooler. I actually put my original Seagate 4TB HDDs in this and they work a dream. They're quite old drives and they operate way faster than the WD system did and the Synology DashHboard isjust so much better.

I recommend the Synology DiskStation DS215j Instead!!
