Product Description

About the Author

William Dampier was the first Englishman to explore parts of what is today Australia, and the first person to circumnavigate the world three times. He was one of the most important British explorers between Sir Walter Raleigh and James Cook. After impressing the British Admiralty with his book, A New Voyage Round the World, Dampier was given command of a Royal Navy ship. On a later voyage, he rescued Alexander Selkirk, a former crewmate who may have inspired Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. Others influenced by Dampier's travels include Lord Nelson and Charles Darwin. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

All William Dampiers books are amazing and take you to the most wonderful places. He is by far for me the greatest Englishman of all time, alot of his maps were still being used right up until satelite technology. Although not in this book (he was unaware of it at the time) it was one of the ships in his fleet during this voyage who put Alexander Selkirk ashore on the Island of Juan Fernandez which is the basis for Robinson Crusoe. Read all Dampiers books, Robinson Crusoe and Woodes Rogers book, you wont regret it.

I had never heard of William Dampier until I came across a book entitled 'A Pirate of Exquisite Mind'; a biography which whets the appetitie about this early adventurer and naturalist. He was, apparently, the first man to voyage around the world 3 times. In this book much of the description is of birds, plants, currents and winds as well as problems with his crew. I found this book was all the more interesting for having read the bio first. The biography perhaps filled in gaps left by Dampier in his telling of his voyage; apparently his books, though, were best sellers in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. I certainly want to collect as many of his own descriptions of his voyages now that I have read this one. An interesting read.
