Voyage of the Harrier Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 61 ratings

One of the most important ocean voyages in history was the circumnavigation of the world by the survey ship HMS Beagle in the early 1830s, with Charles Darwin aboard as ship’s naturalist. Darwin’s account, published in 1839 as Voyage of the Beagle, has never been out of print.
Voyage of the Harrier, is the story of the first detailed re-enactment ever made of the Beagle’s famous voyage. Between 2001 and 2012 the author in his small sailing yacht Harrier went to nearly every port used, and almost every anchorage visited, by the Beagle. Harrier’s voyage was guided in detail by Robert FitzRoy’s Narrative and Darwin’s Beagle Diary. The Beagle’s voyage involved much labourious survey work and it saw the beginning of Darwin’s personal development as a scientist. Harrier’s voyage included a shipwreck and an attack by smugglers in the Timor Sea.

The author’s book, Voyage of the Harrier, combines accounts of the Beagle and Harrier voyages in such a way that the two voyages cast light upon one another. Together, the two narratives help to illuminate the world.

Julian Mustoe has been involved with the sea and a variety of sailing boats ever since he was at school. In the 1960s he twice sailed a small engineless sloop across the North Atlantic. Later in life he took his wife and two children sailing at most weekends and on summer holidays every year.

In 1998 he retired to a boat, and in 2001 he embarked on a circumnavigation. But not just any world cruise. He followed the track of the voyage made by HMS Beagle in the 1830s with Robert FitzRoy and Charles Darwin on board. Julian's was the first recreation in detail of this famous voyage. His recently published book, Voyage of the Harrier, is an account of both his own voyage and that of the Beagle. In October 2015 Harrier was lost in a towing accident in the North Sea.

I've read many such tales of voyages, near and far. They do tend to get a bit 'samey' but in this case the author writes eloquently and without losing the interest of the reader at any point. The few 'political' remarks scattered through the story only add to the colour of the narrative and he has hit that sweet spot in terms of the balance between the sailing itself and the various landfalls. An excellent read!

Julian - I bought this after hearing your story on R4 the other day (June 2016). I know you've already got your new boat and I thought I'd add my tiny bit of support to your life aboard. I can't wait to read it, wishing you continued health and good sailing

What a delightful book to read! You are truly in good company with Julian Mustoe and his distinguished scientific friends Darvin and FitzRoy on their daring voyage around the world. The describtion of the challenge now and then, jumping two hundred years back and forth, is very refreshing. Edutainment at its best! I am looking forward to his next book.

It took some time to get into this book as I expected there to be more about the author's own experience and less about the voyage of the Beagle. However, I eventually warmed to the historical content and appreciated the perspective this gave to the present voyage.

Mustoe knows his craft in several senses of the word. He's a superlative sailor, an excellent researcher, and an able writer. His descriptions are clear and interesting and he brings a certain humor to what could be dull waters. He has a knack for making science accessible and his then-and-now contrapuntal technique works well.

I can only give the book four stars because he didn't actually follow the path of the Beagle through the Galapagos, an area most of us closely associate with Darwin, and I consider it a serious omission.

That said, it's a very enjoyable read, even if you don't believe that there's "nothing—absolute nothing—half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats."
