- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 November 2011I have had a WD-TV media player for a year or two now but it's just started to play up so thought I would try out a cheaper option (I paid less than 1/3rd for this device in comparison to the WD-TV media player) and I am very glad I did. It is about 1/4 of the size and 1/4 of the weight so it is easier to hide out of the way with my small mobile hard drive (powered from this media unit).
It plays all of the media I have so far thrown at it - MPEG4, mkv, avi etc and has listed a whole number of others also. It plays music through your tv also. It loks at your data as though it is just a different drive. This is less advanced than the WD-TV unit as with that one you can put JPEGs on the device and (as long as they have the same name as the video) they will show the picture of each film to play from. However, it's fine to have this less-refined folder/file way of looking at your data - as we most are completely used to this kind of format (if you are not used to browsing directory/ folder/ file on a pc you may struggle with this at first.
The remote control has a large number of buttons on it (40 in all!) whereas my old WD-TV's remote had less than 20. I'm unsure what they are all for at the moment - but am looking forward to finding out.
It has HDMI and AVI outputs plus a usb input and one of an SD/MMC Memory card also.
The player was really easy to set up - in fact as I had already set up a media player before it was just a case of me setting my TV to HDMI3 and plugging it in!
My unit came with the user guide in small format (A6?) but in German - so the dealer had thoughtfully printed out the user guide in English for me. It was delivered just a couple of working days after I ordered it which I thought was exceptionally fast.
Great media player at a great price! Recommended!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 April 2012UPDATE
just bought a WD 1TB HDD and found it wouldn't work...as it was formatted to GPT, works on PC ok but media player wants MBR....Need to convert to MBR then all ok
I am told Aomei Partition Assistant will do this free
Update...............
Found the facility to display remaining movie time.
Found that even with the unit OFF the Attached USB drive is still powered and running, this doesn`t make sense
Also I continually set the output to 1080p in the settings, but it reverts back to 720...Don``t know why
Still going well and playing all files
I previously tried
Patriot PCMPBO25 Box Office 1080p High Definition Media Player
Asus Oplay Mini 7.1 Channel Audio Full HD Media Player
and neither of them played the MKV files I had
However this device plays MKV, DIVX, AVI, MPG with ease.
On screen menu is simple and easy to follow.
Have connected usb pens and 320GB HDD and plays perfectly.
The size is truly amazing, about the size of a cigarette packet.
Power up is very quick
Only `very minor` concern is the text on the remote in the top section is barely readable, as it is grey on a black background. Not a big issue as these functions are rarely used.
There doesn`t seem to be an auto power off, which is a pity.
Also can`t get the file delete to work
It`s worth putting some dark insulating tape over the very very bright blue LED
All in all I award this the full 5 stars as it plays everything I have thrown at it
Extra: Just found out that you need to turn the remote audio up fully to allow the TV audio remote to work in the same range as the TV.
Also if you power down the unit, you will need to reset the video quality to 1080P (assuming you have an HD TV)....if you turn it off with the remote nothing changes
I have a diagram in excel format of the remote, makes it easier to find what the `grey` keys have on them.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 January 2012I purchased one of these, unfortunately before I read that most of the reviews are written by people who have only ever written one review, that being for this item. After some help from the seller I managed to get this working. So far so good. My main gripes are that the quality of the remote isn't great and it also uses the same signal frequency as my television so I have to cover up the infa red on the tv to use it or it changes channels, turns off the tv etc... you get the idea.
So far I've only used it for movies. Its worked well on every file type, obviously doesn't work on protected movies. I use an external hard drive plugged into it via the usb (it also has enough power for the external drive).
Here comes gripe no 2. For some reason it displays the names of each file twice. One seems to be some sort of reference file and the other is the actual movie file. Unfortunately I have to scroll through the entire list of reference files before I get to the actual movie files and given I've transferred a lot of dvd's to the drive its quite annoying to have to scroll through them all - if anyone has a solution for this please do get in touch with me and let me know!
For the money its an ok little gadget.
