Laura has recently married Alec and goes to stay with his family in Cornwall, as she's been ill and he needs to go on a trip and can't leave Laura to struggle on her own. She loves her new surroundings and makes a few new friends, which helps to calm her spirit as she's been made to feel uneasy by Alec's first wife.
Out of the blue a nasty letter has arrived claiming that she's having an affair whilst she's married. One is also sent to her husband, but his daughter finds it first and decides she must travel to Cornwall to see what's going on.
Then another of these anonymous letters arrive accusing someone else, so now the hunt begins for this awful person who is trying to cause trouble for no reason other then jealousy.
The author garbs you right from the start; she takes you a long on this journey which you'll find has a surprising twist in its plot. Her characters have lovely personality and she gives them plenty of depth. :-)
I really enjoyed this book, was an enjoyable novel and was extremely compulsive, (I love books like this), I'd read it in a couple of hours as this was another book I couldn't put down. :-)
It's a book I'd recommend to anyone that loves to read, and It's one I'd defiantly read again as well as being worth every penny. :-)
The important thing to note about this book is that it is really very dated. I am not sure exactly when it is set but most of the attitudes certainly belong to the 1950s - afternoon tea on the lawn, afternoon naps, the old nanny living with the family, the frail female sex who need a man to look after them, female operations which mustn't be mentioned and similar attitudes. However there are also several circumstances of relationships and babies outside marriage which you'd have thought people like this would be horrified by but aren't.
This is a light, gentle garden read where the personalities of the characters are more interesting than the plot. There isn't really a plot as such, although there is an aside of these poison pen letters. This book is really a story about the characters, what they think and how they react.
This isn't the best of Rosamunde Pilcher's books and it does take a while to get used to the dated attitudes. However I still enjoyed the book which was a quick and easy read.

Old fashioned, predictable story of very privileged wealthy characters. Main events set in summer in Cornwall. Okay for a reader wanting an unchallenging read.Published 17 days ago by S J.
