Format: Paperback
This is my second book by this author; I couldn't wait to read another one of her books as I really enjoyed the one I've just finished.

Laura has recently married Alec and goes to stay with his family in Cornwall, as she's been ill and he needs to go on a trip and can't leave Laura to struggle on her own. She loves her new surroundings and makes a few new friends, which helps to calm her spirit as she's been made to feel uneasy by Alec's first wife.

Out of the blue a nasty letter has arrived claiming that she's having an affair whilst she's married. One is also sent to her husband, but his daughter finds it first and decides she must travel to Cornwall to see what's going on.

Then another of these anonymous letters arrive accusing someone else, so now the hunt begins for this awful person who is trying to cause trouble for no reason other then jealousy.

The author garbs you right from the start; she takes you a long on this journey which you'll find has a surprising twist in its plot. Her characters have lovely personality and she gives them plenty of depth. :-)

I really enjoyed this book, was an enjoyable novel and was extremely compulsive, (I love books like this), I'd read it in a couple of hours as this was another book I couldn't put down. :-)

It's a book I'd recommend to anyone that loves to read, and It's one I'd defiantly read again as well as being worth every penny. :-)

Laura, Alec's adoring but rather timid second wife goes to convalesce with Alec's family in a large house in Cornwall. Once there she gains confidence but menacing events start to occur which lead to a minor tragedy. The book culminates in the reunion of Alec and the daughter he has not seen since she was a child, and unmasks the unsuspected madness of a family friend. The book is a rivetting read and an absolute must for anyone who enjoyed reading September.

Rosamunde pilcher writes fairy stories for adults, of which Voices in Summer is a perfect example. Idealistic story with idealistic people in ideal settings with a happy every after ending, just perfect for a summer read and a feel good feeling.

I like Rosamund Pilcher when I need a comfort read; no effort demanded from me to think. She never fails. This was a little predictable but the characters were nice people, apart from Sylvie, and life-like. This is Pilcher's strength - that she provides the reader with a credible story without a protracted plot. The characters would all have been nice to have to dinner; perhaps not poor May or neurotic Sylvie. No-one would have rocked the boat and all would have been polite and appreciative. If you have a lazy afternoon to while away this is the book to open and simply enjoy.

I discovered this title after having read all of Rosamunde Pilcher's other novels. Once again she has built an involving story from believable and interesting characters, real situations and charming locations. I have begun to notice a pattern with some of her novels and readers may notice a similarity to "Winter Solstice" - the convergence of the main characters from all over the world under the one roof, the history of some kind of tragedy in some of their lives, and the uncanny ability of strangers to fall in love after only a few days. This is still a lovely story and the characters linger in your mind long after you've turned the last page.

Good enough story but have to agree with other reviewers regarding Laura's inability to visit Scotland after her mysterious operation but it was ok for her to go to Cornwall and swim in the sea etc etc. Also who would stay on their own with people they had never ever met!! Can't think of any operation that was not life threatening bu couldn't wait a week or two either. I think a lot of it was just made up to fit in with the story. There was rather a lot that left you wondering.

I was very surprised when I saw this title of Rosamund Pilcher's in Amazon. I thought I had read everything she had ever written. But I was wrong, here was another little jewel waiting to be discovered. I kept it for a spare afternoon and more or less read it in one go and it did not disappoint. Reading Rosamund Pilcher is like being wrapped in a warm blanket on a cold day beside a roaring fire with a cup of hot chocolate in hand. You are transported to a better place. Voices in Summer makes you absolutely desperate to travel to Cornwall immediately in order savour its balmy delights of the ocean and the climate and the atmosphere, which simply ooze from the pages. While reading, you are aware that it is set in a rarefied, more genteel world, which doesn't seem to exist anymore, though I do so wish it did, but the sentiments and the messages and the sheer force of human nature within the characters are timeless as always. Basically I completely loved it and didn't want it to finish, Thank you amazon for bringing it to my attention and Please, Please, Please Rosamund Pilcher, write some more!!

Rosamunde Pilcher's books are always quite gentle & genteel. In this book Laura has had an operation and goes to recuperate in Cornwall with distant members of her husband's family. Her husband heads up to Scotland to have an active holiday with friends. All seems to be well until poison pen letters start appearing.
The important thing to note about this book is that it is really very dated. I am not sure exactly when it is set but most of the attitudes certainly belong to the 1950s - afternoon tea on the lawn, afternoon naps, the old nanny living with the family, the frail female sex who need a man to look after them, female operations which mustn't be mentioned and similar attitudes. However there are also several circumstances of relationships and babies outside marriage which you'd have thought people like this would be horrified by but aren't.
This is a light, gentle garden read where the personalities of the characters are more interesting than the plot. There isn't really a plot as such, although there is an aside of these poison pen letters. This book is really a story about the characters, what they think and how they react.
This isn't the best of Rosamunde Pilcher's books and it does take a while to get used to the dated attitudes. However I still enjoyed the book which was a quick and easy read.
