Steward is a Beta— a clone. In his memories, he’s an elite commando for an orbital policorp— but because his Alpha never did a brain-scan update, Steward’s memories are fifteen years out of date . . . and in those fifteen years, everything has changed.
An interstellar war destroyed the company that held his allegiance. His wife has divorced him, along with the second wife that he can’t even remember. Most of his comrades died in a useless battle on a world called Sheol, and those who survived are irrevocably scarred. An alien race has arrived and become the center of a complex and deadly intrigue.
And someone has murdered him.

This is definitely amongst the better books I've read, even outside of sci fi. Non sci-fi people would particularly like it, as really it's more a detective/self journey/spy thriller book with sci fi elements. Reading it does not feel at all like it was written in the 80s, and obviously a good chunk of the concept was borrowed in the Altered Carbon series of books and TV show nearly two decades later. The only puzzle for me is why its author didn't choose to write sequels, it had a lot of potential, as indeed Altered Carbon later showed. Anyway, this book easily stands well standalone, well worth a read in my opinion.

This was the first Walter Jon Williams I had read, nearly 20 years ago. Because of the impact of this book, I have hunted down everything he has had published since (and most of that in the US, which was a real pain to track down before Amazon!) I also re-read when I run out of new books to enthuse me, and have had to rebuy this title twice to replace copies I've leant to friends.
The book follows on from the Cyberpunk novel, Hardwired, although there are no characters in common. This is no sequel, and I would actually recommend reading this book first, as it is, in my opinion, a much better novel. As Voices is set some hundred years or more after Hardwired, the setting is not quite the traditional fare of corporations, netrunners and cyber psychosis of a cyberpunk novel, but it still retains the science-fiction meets noir style. Steward is not a clean, law abiding hero, he is much more the science fiction equivalent of Chandler's Marlowe. As with any of Walter Jon Williams' books, its strengths are the character depth and development. The story follows a single protagonist on his journey through a world that he barely recognises, following clues he had left to himself before his death and cloned reincarnation.
What made the book special to me was the philosophical perspectives that are explored through the story. The central character has a Zen philosophy, but the technology of multiple lifetimes through clone reincarnation opens up a wide range of concepts. The exploration of the philosophical implications gives the book a depth that many of his contemporaries lacked. The book manages to stick to its own Zen philosophy as well - the story is tersely written, and ends in under 300 pages without at any point slowing the pace. You get a sense that no words were wasted in the telling.
If you like the book, be warned - Walter Jon Williams does not like to be pidgeon-holed into a particular style. Also be warned, he's been writing books for nearly 3 decades, and that means if you become hooked, you will have a lot of catching up to do.

Really enjoyed this well-paced and inventive story.
It builds its world well and is a good blend of action and espionage that keeps you enthralled to the end.

Very good. I like Walter Jon Williams, but some of his latest books disappointed me a bit. I was surprised how good this one is. Complicated plot, unusual aliens, fast but interesting action, and not overloaded. Everything is believable, characters are well fleshed out. Overall excellent book.

Turned out to be a really good book after lowly getting into the story and eventually getting to grips with all the policorps, but that might just have been my lack of short term memory.

This should be read by any antiterrorist organisation trying to come to terms with the radicalisation of their Muslim population.
