The VivoBarefoot Trail Freak Women's Running Shoes have a lightweight natural fit, duo 3M mesh and laminated structure that gives a comfortable and secure 'second skin' fit. The mesh provides breathability to keep the wearer cool and dry as well as providing reflectivity in low-light conditions to keep the wearer safe and visible. The wearer is able to achieve total flexibility from the tough, fine mesh and patented ultra-thin, puncture-resistant sole. Giving natural motion control by allowing the the hallux to engage rapidly with the earth as well as independent rear and fore-foot movement. The Trail Freak has a Dri-lex lining which is a lightweight, performance lining specifically designed to wick moisture away from the skin to provide the ultimate comfort and a dry ride. The toe box is wide and the shoe has a zero-drop, ensuring there is plenty of room for natural movement and natural shock absorption by allowing the arch and toe to load, splay and recoil. The sole is perfect for off-road with a great balance of grip and proprioception. These shoes are specifically made for the outdoors, with 4.5mm lugs which give an unprecedented amount of traction to give the wearer confidence in extreme conditions and muddy, stony and grassy terrains.

Great fit, large toebox and amazing tread. Even long distance was fine (30 miles) and whilst the sole is very sturdy, with some cushioning socks, they proved comfortable enough. Running on road for any duration over 5 minutes is tough. Not un-manageable, but do not think that these can be your 50/50 road and trail shoes.
Will buy again, but after a year of abuse, these are still going strong.
These are my third pair of vivo's and are a brilliant trail shoe. I found them to have no hot-spots over distances up to ten miles and very capable in the British wet and mud! The 'teeth' on the sole of the shoe that provide such great grip are comfortable on tarmac, even in the rain(though I found them a little slippy on very wet uphill road sprints). The shoe is heavier than some of vivo's other models but still light enough to be a great minimalist running shoe and although the teeth grip exceptionally well they do not pick up much mud, leaves, or grass and so you avoid the 'bogged down' effect with similarly designed trail shoes.
Sizing is very important in this variety of running shoes so if you're a first-time buyer make sure your seller has a good returns/exchange policy should you wish to change the size. My advice would be buy smaller than usual - I am a UK men's 9 in most shoes but a EU42 (UK men's 7.5/8) in these!
Ensure your transition to running in these shoes is gradual as your lower legs/feet will tire faster than usual when making the transition to forefoot striking. For more advice on barefoot/minimalist running see my twitter account @MrCharlieGreen
Size wise: Having read other reviews about the sizing I went a size smaller than my others (42/8 instead of 43/9). They have come up perhaps a touch too small but not enough to be uncomfortable or rub, a half size difference would have been perfect. My normal Vivo's are like slippers these days but I do like plenty of toe room.
Performance wise: My first outing in them was a mixed terrain race covering grass, mud and some flooded country lanes. On the grass and mud they provided plenty of grip and even in the heavy, thick clay mud they didn't get clogged up or hang on to the mud to make for heavy feet. At no point did I feel I was gonna lose them to the mud and the laces stayed tied all the way too! I'm less than convinced by the water resistance claims, but then the only ones on route with dry feet were the marshals in wellies! maybe in slightly less extreme conditions they will cope better. They felt okay on road too. I had been slightly concerned that the lugs on the bottom might create pressure when running on tarmac (especially given the thin sole and wide spacing) but there were no such issues and no hot spots were evident either. I'm not sure I'd trust them to grip on hill sprints on wet tarmac (but then they're not designed for that).
All told I'm very pleased with these, they offer most of the grip I had with the Innov8's without the tendency to hang onto mud. The thin sole allows plenty of feedback and provides the confidence of knowing your feet are protected. As with other Vivo's the toe box is wide and allows for plenty of foot expansion during ground contact, as a result rubs and sore, squashed toes were not an issue. I will definitely be replacing these with more Vivo's if and when I finally wear them out!
