The only problem I find when reading Marquez in English or Spanish is that he makes writing seem effortless as he moves imperceptibly between events and characters. This particular work is for me a very generous insight into the beginnings of a remarkable life built on an uncommon observation of what it means to be Colombian, Costena and Human.
If your spanish is good enough, you will love this novel which is written in a very unusual style, as memories of the author as a child bing the present to life. You will be astonished by the way the past is reconfigured. Something to pick up when you are bored with unoriginal detective novels.
