Opus 3 No.11 can be turned into a stunning showpiece as witnessed by conductors such as Toscanini , but on this beautifully played set from Marriner it hardly stands out and everything sounds like posh background music . The recording is over forty years old but sounds excellent .

Concise, clear recordings of Vivaldi's famous and scintillating set of concerti - that's in a nutshell anyway!

In these concerti Vivaldi really started to mould the form to it's height, taking aspects of former concerti, the concerti grossi, sonatas and trio sonatas and blending them into a wonderfully unique mix of music. These concerti are in four groups of three - a concerto for 4 violins, a concerto for 2 and a concerto for 1.

I wouldn't really say that any of these pieces are well-known in popular culture (as, for example, his Four Seasons are) but there is much catchy music here, full of exciting pulses, runs and turns. The never ending energy of the first movement of No. 3, the addictiveness of the first and last movements of No. 6, the poignant and wistful theme of the first movement of No. 9 (as well as the simple beauty of the slow movement). I've never thought of Vivaldi as the best for slow movements, but there is certainly a beauty and individuality in his, which I have more and more come to discover, especially with experience of some of his other sets - Opp. 4, 8 and 9 (Op. 9, La Cetra, is particularly good, and I recommend it very much (even if you don't like these)).

Vivaldi sometimes seems to be criticised for his simple accompaniment, use of repetition and virtuosity. But I say no - his accompaniment (not always simple) always exploits the sonorities of the string orchestra excellently (and just as much in his slow movements). His repetition of melodic figures is satisfying, and you listen because you expect it. As for virtuosity, it is always well-placed and never used at the expense of good music-making.

If you want masterful fugal, contrapuntal things, then go to someone like Bach, but don't criticise Vivaldi for not doing it!

Marriner and his Academy can sometimes be bland, but not here. This is a lively, radiant and imaginative performance using modern instruments, which I prefer to period instruments. The 1972 recording, made in St. John Smiths square London, is wonderful Decca analogue with an immaculate transfer. The string playing is full, resilient, warm, and bracing. The continuo - lute and organ as well as harpsichord - is delightful and varied.
