These eight concertos form an excellent assortment taken from the many fine recordings made by the EC in the 1980s and 1990s. The two best known are probably the Concerto for two mandolins in G and the flute concerto known as 'La Notte'. The latter does not appeal to me when played by other groups, but soloist Lisa Beznosiuk brings a charm and finesse to the work lacking in other recordings. Other front rank performers include Simon Standage (violin) and the late and lamented David Reichenberg (oboe). As usual period instruments are used throughout.

This disc is a compilation of music previously released in the mid to late 1980's. The whole of the contents of a disc previously titled 'alla rustica' are included here in a different running order. To those six pieces have been added extra concertos from the same vintage to increase the playing time and make this a better value product.

The recordings throughout are very good as is the playing. Pinnock's direction guarantees a reliable level of expertise and he is supported in this by the skilled players of the English Consort. Playing is lively and the music has been chosen for its innate interest and quality giving an attractive selection of solo instrument timbres. Followers of this group of players will know to expect enjoyable music making without the extremes of tempi and dynamics often found in more recent period groups, notably from Italy.

I would suggest that this disc makes an excellent introduction to this range of music by Vivaldi. For those interested in a moderate selection of such music this will be an ideal collection. However, for those intending to greatly extend their Vivaldi collection I would suggest investigating the wide range of options available on the Naive label where the concertos are grouped by type and will eventually include hundreds of the concertos plus operas and much else besides.

In the meantime this disc will continue to yield much pleasure as a representative collection of concertos and can safely be considered as a good buy.

Pinnock has come on a long way since thrashing out hymns on the school piano during morning assembly (This was the same training ground as David Sinclair of prog-rock's Caravan)
He has successfully poured these pieces into his more familiar Bach mould.
The titular 'many instruments' include strings, bassoon, oboe, a delicate mandolin, (mercifully
no banjo), but unfortunately no Pinnock harpsichord. Buy it, play it at high volume.
This is joyous music arranged and played by artists

An excellent version of Vivaldi's work. I was struck by the cohesive performance of the orchestra and their consistency proved involving. the sound quality was adequate. I have heard better, perhaps the use of period instruments had something to do with it. This is not just a "safe" choice, it is very good one and I clearly recommend it.
