Product Description

Viva Elvis is a 21st century celebration of Elvis and his music, featuring the voice of the king in a whole new context. The undisputed King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis Presley, remains one of the most iconic and powerful forces in popular culture. This postmodern studio masterwork invokes the spirit and essence of Elvis from a contemporary perspective, while furthering the revolutionary impulses of Elvis' sound, re-imagining the king’s own vocal performances in a broad variety of new musical settings. This new sound echos Elvis' own versatility and ability to master all music genres, from Delta blues to rockabilly, from raw soul to gospel, from Southern folk to Vegas pop, while incorporating elements of garage rock, punk, urban and hip-hop.
This deluxe edition includes a second disc featuring the original songs.

As a huge Elvis fan, even I get sick and tired of re-hashed compilations at this time every year. There are only so many 'Lost' tracks that SONY/BMG can get away with. So they tried something different. A little experimentation is good so long as it keeps the integrity of the artist intact. But when I put this on, it was like discovering the King all over again. This puts the modern crop of pretenders in the shade. The music is different, it pumps along with modern beats and big basslines but it's still Elvis' vocal on top that oozes charisma and warmth that you are drawn to. Classics such as 'Burning Love', 'Suspicious Minds', 'Heartbreak Hotel', 'Blue Suede Shoes' and 'King Creole' all get the five-star treatment whilst the 'Love Me Tender' and 'Can't Help Falling In Love' duets are beautifully re-created. This album is too good to pass-up. Definitely a contender for Album of the Year. Cannot recommend highly enough, even for the casual music lover.

Is the world really in need of a new Elvis Presley album 33 years after the death of the King of Rock N' Roll After only one listen to Viva Elvis: The Album, that answer is a resounding YES.Unlike other post-mortem recordings, Viva Elvis is something truly unique. It's not a rehash of old material, nor is it some obscure second rate "lost track". Viva Elvis is an honest reworking of Elvis' greatest hits using original master samples of the King's voice worked into modern riffs and beats. There's no attempt to make the tracks into dance remixes like A Little Less Conversation; they come across with dignity, respect and care - and that's what makes Viva Elvis unique and magical.Mastermind Erich van Tourneau (who's Canadian by the way), worked with more than 900 Elvis albums, films, live recordings and studio takes to make more than 17,000 samples of Elvis' voice. With the assistance of Elvis Presley Enterprises, we can finally hear what Elvis would have sounded like if he were recording today. And the results are phenomenal. With 10 songs and two dialog-based cuts, Viva Elvis not only shows how masterful Presley really was, it also shows how van Tourneau really got it. The songs, although arranged with modern production and modern grooves, still manage to keep the original feeling and messages of the songs. It's hard to rate any of the tracks better than the other, but some stand out more because of the choice of re-workings. Hearbreak Hotel captures a new killer blues feel, while King Creole makes the original recording sound mediocre. I'm more of fan of the upbeat songs, but I was like that with the Elvis originals, so Blue Suede Shoes, That's Alright and a new rocking rendition of Burning Love get my body bopping.Read more ›

Very simply this is a refreshing remix album of recordings by the great Elvis. The remixes of the songs Blue suede shoes, That`s all right, heartbreak hotel, love me tender, king creole, bossa nova baby, Burning love, Memories, Can`t help falling in love, you`ll never walk alone, and Suspicious Minds are interesting and contempory.
Also the choice of songs and the programme running order make a good new album from old material.
There are two versions of the release available. One is just the new remix album on its own. The other is the "deluxe edition" which has two discs, the remix album on cd 1, and the original tracks on cd2. Its interesting to hear both versions and I enjoyed playing the songs twice since the original mixes are fantastic and still sound great and the remixes are different enough to make it a uniqe release.
Its an excellent release for young and old.

It didn't take me long to decide whether or not I liked this album. Just the opening bars of the first track sealed it for me. I felt it would be good, and it was.

With over 50 reviews already on this album there isn't much I can add in its support. Though I enjoyed Burning Love the least, I can honestly say I thoroughly relished all the remixed tracks here. Impressively, and most importantly, they STILL SOUNDED ELVIS.

What distinguishes these remixes from other horrible amateur attempts to bring Elvis into the 21st century is the bluesy-rock dance instrumentation. No childish technocrap anywhere in sight. And that's the difference.

These are the best remix songs since JXL's brilliant A Little Less Conversation in 2002. Of course, not everybody will like this album. That would be impossible. Hardcore older fans may not appreciate anyone meddling with Elvis songs, and I do reason with that to a large degree. But the musical arrangements on this collection are so fantastic I had to give in.

And look at the price now. I bought several copies and gave them out to friends and relatives. They've not listened to much else since then!

Recommended.

I was a great fan of the A Little Less Conversation and Rubberneckin remixes and was both disenchanted and disappointed with the skill-less Spankox remix album. I don't know where the EPE quality control staff were on the day that they authorised that album! Fortunately this remix album is everything that we Elvis fans should have got as a follow-up to the brilliant A Little Less Conversation and Rubberneckin remixes. Perhaps as an Elvis fan this will go someway to remedying my recent disillusionment with Sony/BMG/EPE.

This album is innovative whereas I feared that Sony/BMG would play it safe by sticking to the trusted formula of the original songs - and not adding a contemporary enough edge to the remix. This album is a respectful contemporisation of some well know Elvis songs. Personally, I wish Sony/BMG would have been a little more daring with their song choices and opted for lesser known tracks such as Edge of Reality and Let Yourself Go - but have no doubt about it - this album works! My main criticism is that the album is too short but it is still worth the price tag.
