least two important ways. First, Dr. Downing writes just as if you are
sitting down with him for a consultation. And beyond being a congenial
writer, he is clearly experienced in this subject area. The doctor is
president of the British Society for Ecological Medicine and has been in
practice for over 30 years. The second way this book stands out is that it
is orthomolecular: it recommends really large doses of
nutrients, instead of drugs. Very few allergy books seriously consider the
therapeutic use of nutritional supplements. In addition, the author tells
why sugar, provocative foods, environmental toxins, and most pharmaceuticals
are to be avoided. Still, he does consider drugs as options in some
circumstances, and provides appropriate cautions. Not surprisingly, he
advocates that you eat good foods, exercise, and take vitamins instead. But
the author tells why and how to pull it off. And, with his very engaging
writing style, he makes it so clear that you want to just go and do it. Even
high doses of vitamin C up to "bowel tolerance" sounds good - if it will
help get rid of allergy symptoms. If Drs. Linus Pauling, Abram Hoffer, and
Robert Cathcart are correct, it will indeed. Many other researchers are
cited, with a total of nearly 100 scientific references provided. I
understand Dr. Downing is in London UK. I wish he were closer, because this
book indicates that the man really understands allergies and the people who
have them. If you have allergies, and cannot get to Harley Street to sit
down with him, this book is for you. And it has to be cheaper.
I used to have chronic cough every year that later became almost year-round, I couldn't even work with that horrible coughing. To treat it, I used coltsfoot, which is unfortunately bad for liver and dangerous for children, but I got to the point where I did not care anymore as long as it helped. It did help, my cough completely disappeared in a few weeks I drank it, and my liver seems fine.
Now, as soon as I feel that scratchy throat which precedes cough, I take vitamin C, at least 6 grams a day for the first couple of days and then a bit less, until the feeling goes away.
I have a skeptical nature and don't believe in anything unless I checked it myself, and I swear by vitamin C now since it works for me and all my family members.
Not just cough but any symptoms of a starting cold are cured by vitamin C in large doses. The only side effect is diarrhea, which only happens when you are already cured but still taking a large dose of vit. C. When you are sick, the side effect does not happen no matter how much you take - I guess the body utilizes it all. Even little kids have no problem taking large quantities, no upset stomach.
The book got 4 stars because there is not much information in it, mainly just proving his only point. It`s a very useful point, and it is probably needed to be extensively proved to a lot of people, but when I read it, I though that a couple of pages would be sufficient enough for me to get the idea.
Dr. Downing clearly explains what allergies are, what causes them and what we can do about them. He shows allergy sufferers how to best avoid the inhalants, foods and chemicals that can cause allergic reactions, and gives specific information on treatment using diet, nutrition, exercise and lifestyle changes.
If you suffer from allergies and are looking for simple, practical ways to both prevent and treat allergic reactions, I highly recommend this book.
My daughter has anaphalaxis allergies.
This offered the suggestion of vitamin C and a few others.
Uh, yeah, that was brillant. I could've googled that up for free.
Nothing new in this book. Learned nothing.
