So if you don`t have a high drain on your battery this solar charger works well ,if you do forget it, go and buy an optimate charger or similar.
Unlike many other similar products this one supplies both a cigarette lighter socket plug AND crocodile clips for direct connection to the battery (which is necessary if your cigarette lighter socket does not stay live when the ignition key is removed). There is an in-line connector plug/socket mid way in the cable which makes it very easy to feed the cable through a small hole in the bulkhead to reach the battery if needed. This pug is designed so that it is impossible to reverse polarity. IMPORTANTLY - there is also an in-line fuse on the positive side of the cable so that, if the cable insulation gets chafed a short circuit will not cause a fire. I have not seen this on any other panel that I have bought.
I tested the panel with a multimeter on a 100% cloudy day with slight drizzle falling. It produced the stated 17 volts at 0.086amps - again most of the other cheap trickle charge panels will suffer some voltage drop in such conditions. This one is exceptional.
If I have one criticism it is only a very small one. The panel (again unusually) comes with 4 rubber suction cups (2 + 2 spares!) to allow you to stick it to the inside of a windscreen. In practice these suction cups are a little bit small and I found that I had to allow the bottom edge of the panel to rest against the top of the dash to take some weight of the cups, otherwise they tended to come unstuck. Due to the slightly textured finish of the dash the suction cups would not stick on to it. However a couple of strips of double sided tape would fix it in place quite nicely.Read more ›
Great service from the seller too! 5*****
Why three? If you buy one and use it this way, make sure no one else starts the van without disconnecting the solar panel - it blows the blocking diode and that's it - dead.
Fully charge your battery before using these units. They are not designed to recharge a flat battery.
It is not recommended that anything higher than a 2w solar powered charger be used on vehicle batteries which are less than 30ah. The "ah" is shown on the battery.
Solar chargers above 4w can be used should you continue to experience drain on a 70ah battery or above. Power drain is different from one vehicle to another. These items replace a small amount of wattage within the hour on a sunny day and less when the day is overcast and cloudy. Therefore, it can be a matter of seeing what works for you.
The 1.8w (costing £16.99) was useless for the power loss from my 100ah battery on my 25 year-old BMW 3.0i alarm system. I purchased a 4w from a different manufacturer on Amazon. It's built in a durable folding case with stands and has a cigarette lighter connecting lead and a separate battery lead with clips. It also has a green LED light displaying when it is charging. The green light extinguished at night when it is too dark to charge. The 4w cost me just under £18.00. I'm making use of the 1.8w by using it in conjunction with the 4w, which has made a huge difference. Hence, a 6-7w would've been ideal to properly fix my problem.
