Product Description

In 1909, Aleister Crowley and his protégé Victor Neuburg obtained a series of 33 mystical visions. At once beautiful, horrible, and inspiring, these inner world explorations (and two earlier ones) were published in 1911 as The Vision & the Voice.

In Visions & Voices, James Eshelman joins the text of Aleister Crowley s Enochian visions with horoscopes for each. To this he adds a masterful astrological and Qabalistic analysis, expanding and deepening his original landmark study (1997- 2001). It is his most mature work to date, blending rare expertise in many subjects.

Preliminary chapters provide a valuable introduction to Qabalistic and astrological topics including: the Four Worlds, the Tree of Life, Qabalistic psychology, Enochian magick, the Three Æons, the Holy Guardian Angel and the Abyss, the impact of astrological factors on deep psychological states, and induced mystical vision as a means of exploring the personal and collective unconscious.

The lengthy Glossary will be a standard reference on many an occultist's bookshelf for decades to come.

Visions & Voices will be of considerable interest to astrologers, ceremonial magicians, devotees of mythology and comparative religion, and all who are interested in the operation of symbols (and the archetypes that engender them) in the workings of the human psyche and in crises of transformation.

This book also describes historically rare, extraordinary spiritual states that are becoming increasingly accessible to living women and men. By its words and images, it engenders a contagion of a higher mode of consciousness spread by sympathy. Reading this book mindfully will provide one form of spiritual initiation.

Additionally, it portrays an eclectic spirituality that enthuses our universal need to intimately connect with our own spiritual ideals, rather than dictating what that ideal should be.

5.0 out of 5 stars V & V & V & V's 19 April 2011
By William W. Duvendack - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Whenever there is commentary and insight into the works of Aleister Crowley, it is always wise to keep in mind the mindset and background of the author. This is worth noting because James Eshelman is one of the foremost scholars in the world on the work of Aleister Crowley, and it shows through in this work. Going into detail, James looks at one particular work of Mr. Crowleys, and proverbially adds his two cents. This work is extremely lucid, and brings to light several details that Mr. Crowley presumably knew and left out, or didn't know at all. While this book is not for the beginner, it is one that is a must for the serious student of Crowley's work, in particular those of an Enochian bent. Highly recommended, but only to those that see the serious and true value of the detail.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book on the Hermetic Sciences 20 Jan. 2011
By Gabriel - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This book begins by giving a comprehensive overview of the Hermetic Sciences - Qabalah, Mysticism, Mystery Schools, Enochian Magick, and Astrology. The author provides his extensive background and insight into Aleister Crowley and his Enochian visions to expound on the astrological and qabalistic background for much of the text. I think it is a book that has some range and is good for the beginner as well as those who are very experienced in these subjects. Not only that, but the author takes the position that I admire so much of the system of Aleister Crowley (amongst others)- "Don't take my word for it - see it for yourself!". The method being Science and the aim being that of Religion. I'd recommend this for anyone interested in these varied subjects.

5.0 out of 5 stars No, it is not for dummies! 11 April 2011
By Paul Clark - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
No, this is not Magick for Dummies. But why would we expect it to be. That is like critcising a book on Neurological Surgery, because it isn't casual reading. (Can you imagine a book, "Brain Surgery - Self taught in Three Easy Lessons!) What Eshelman has given us though, is a major advancement in the study of the subject of Aliester Crowley. And this study is a foundational resource for the students of the Life and Philosopy of the great Beast. For those who have taken the time to properly learn their attributions and sybolism, it is facinating. Astrology is not my forte, but after reading this book, I defintly am in the Sideral Camp. Jim's expanation of the vision in reference to the Moon's aspects is startlingly striking from the point of view of the Hermetic Qabalist. It shows that Dion Fortune was right, when she wrote:"What I imagine is subjective. But, what we both imagine is objective!" This is a reference book that should be in any person's library who calls him/herself a serious student of the Western Mystery Tradition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for any serious student! 31 Jan. 2011
By Kindle Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This book is definitely one of the best reads of the year. It's also a huge source of information which is amazing considering the low price. This book could easily go for way more and still be worth every penny. The introduction is the best explanation of the Western Mysteries that I've seen. I highly recommend it for the experienced and beginner alike.
