Noir Desir's fans waited a long time for this album. The expectations were so high and Noir Desir succeeded to meet that expectations! Songs are so great that they not only adress rock-lovers but good music lovers.
Songs have social messages to people about racism, peace and environmentalism.
This album will be one of the classics of world music. My favourite songs are "Le grand incendie", "Bouquet de nerfs" and "Le Vent Nous Portera"
Certainly worths to buy!

Zut Alors!. This is how alternative-rock should sound when it gets to its mid-thirties. Noir Desir have mellowed since "666 667 Club" but the venom is still there in the performance and the subject matter. Acoustic guitars, subtle synths and some good ol' rock n roll create the finest European LP of 2002.Sadly this will be virtually ignored in the English music press but Noir Desir are one of the finest talents in Europe today.

Noir Desir were one of the most innovative bands around. Their lead singer Bertrand Cantat has been in the press of late for killing his girlfriend, but this doesn't overshadow the brilliance of their music, and this is their best album by far. Very few bands have the honesty to release albums where every track is different and a genre in itself. If you love music - buy this album. I did a compilation of the best of Noir Desir recently and virtually all of the tracks from this album were on it! The last track is pompous garbage a la Jim Morrison at his worst - but "Lost" is one of the best songs of all time. Don't worry about the French thing - the emotion comes across whatever language you speak. Indispensable! Get it! Got it? Good!

Since this is a .co.uk site I will include a somewhat superfluous statement. Noir desir [désir] are a very successful rock group. Not only in their native France I might add.
Now, for the album itself I should say that it is not your usual rock record. You won't find many fast paced or electric guitar dominated tracks.
Nor is it like other Noir Desir records. I guess if you had to have an introduction to their music you'd be better off trying "666.667 Club" or "Tostaky", which are very good themselves. If it was between these two, pick the first.
But this is a record to have, not because it's representative of Noir Desir or because you will acquaint yourself with french rock (if such a thing actually exists), but because this record is a masterpiece in its own right.
In it you'll find gems. Some you will recognise instantly, such as "Le vent nous portera". Others you'll have to listen the album over a couple of times to spot. I won't ruin the pleasure of discovering yourself.
Now, I don't know much French. Presumably you don't know either. That probably diminishes the listening value, if only judging from the track "Lost", whose words are either in English or simple enough to understand with a little effort and knowledge of some basic french words (...such as femme). "I'm lost but I'm not stranded yet".
And to translate, "Le vent nous portera" means "The wind sweeps us along" or rather "We are being drifted by the wind".

I totally agree with the other reviewers. This is something really special, comparable with the first two Velvet Underground albums, or the Miles Davis electric band of the early '70s. It pushes the 'rock' format way beyond its normal parameters and makes much else in the field, however good, seem safe and predictable. An absolutely brilliant work by a group of extraordinary musicians.
