I bought this book from Amazon and they delivered promptly as ever, so no problem with them. The book is generally ok but it has not been checked or proof-read properly. The first 2 Artists I looked up contained errors. Paul Weller's debut album doesn't appear and The Enemy are described as an "American" Band.
Come on Virgin, I expected more. I guess this has been rushed out, but that's no excuse. If I buy a reference book I expect it to contain accurate information. I've only had it a day so I've no idea what errors I'll find next!

I bought it as a present for my husband together with the Volume 2 (The Virgin Book of British Hit Singles). I was a little concern about the lack of picture and really small print as my husband's eyesight is not that 100% and he is struggling to read some prints. But he was so delighted with those volumes that doesn't mind to use magnofying glass - he says that all what he wanted are there in both volumes- just to recollect the songs, artist and albums through the past years. The price is very good for this too. Five stars from my husband and me.

This comparison with the Guinness book applies equally to both the Hit Singles and Hit Albums. There is an advantage in having the Singles and Albums in the same book since it gives a more complete picture when researching the history of an artist. The most colourful part of these Virgin books is the cover since the internal print is monochrome. However, this not detract from the main information presentation. Where is does suffer however is where the added information about Silver, Gold or Platinum gains in the British or American charts. Colour does help in this respect. The additional information about certain highlighted artists is better and an additional section relating to downloading has been included. All in all a very comprehensive tool for any Music Programme Presenter to have.

An updated book on the UK album charts is always a welcome release, and this one from 1956 - 2008 is no exception, and thankfully it is extremely detailed. Sprinkled throughout the book are some very detailed facts that will keep you enthralled for hours, including `Most Weeks at no. 1',' Biggest First Week Sales', `Best Selling Download Albums', and the `Top Selling Soundtracks' to name but a few.
There's a fascinating introduction to the book called `From Tranzophobia to Hell and Back Again' which makes for interesting reading (all 10 pages of it) which is a unique synopsis of the past 40 years of the album charts.
Listed chronologically are all the no. 1 albums from 1956 - 2008, and we also get the complete list of no. 1 compilations since its separation from the main artists album charts in 1989, and a timeline of the changes the album charts have undergone throughout its existence.
As ever we get the A to Z of every act who's had a top 40 hit album and a detailed biog on all the major artists, but this book goes much further. There are detailed artist biographies on specific artists throughout the book, some which have had considerable success (Mariah Carey and Stevie Wonder) but others are a surprise inclusion having actually not set the album charts on fire over the years (Dr Dre, Flood/Youth and Otis Redding amongst them).
Even the 15 notable albums that are discussed in detail are a surprise choice. There's no Beatles, Oasis, Queen or Michael Jackson mentioned. Instead we get Chuck Berry, Billy Fury, MC5, Public Enemy and My Chemical Romance, but I suppose Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Madonna, The Smiths and Jeff Buckley just about balance things up.

Having used a different reference for my music before this, thought I'd try Virgin's tomes and am quite pleased with them. Easy enough to navigate and full of the information I need.

Much better than last Years's 'Hit Singles' Book. Yes, it has some
mistakes in it, but so do all Chart Books.
It contains Lists of the UK's Top 100 Studio Albums, The Top 40 Artist
'Hits' Albums, & the Top 5 Film Soundtracks - all brought up-to-date, to
2009, & all with their Sales Totals next to them. There are many other
Facts & Feats Lists in the Book, too.
Well worth buying - don't be put off by the 2008 Singles Book - this is
a vast improvement!!!

Reference book packed with facts about the beloved vinyl. I know you should flick to see specific details, but I eneded up reading full sections! I am becoming an LP anorak.
