"A wonderful baking bible for the modern home cook – an instant classic!" (Irish Independent)

"This is a lip-smacking collection of classic cakes and new interpretations for the discerning modern home baker" (Crumbs)

"With a recent trend towards healthy baking, Ptak’s book gets the balance right. She uses wholegrains and the natural sweetness of fruit in her recipes, but there’s also just the right amount of decadence" (Sunday Business Post)

I'm a professional baker and buy a LOT of baking books...for inspiration, for information, to keep up to date with what's current...but this is the first for a long time that I am using to actually cook from. It looks beautiful, the writing is great and the recipes are exciting...plus, they actually WORK! Claire has a great baking pedigree and it shows on every page. I would recommend this to all but the complete novice. It will certainly be at the front of my shelf for a long time to come.

I bought this book as soon as it came out & have not been disappointed. Every recipe I have made from it has turned out perfectly. I now use her banana bread & carrot cake as my go to recipes. Also worth several goes (!) are the cinnamon buns, coconut macaroons, egg yolk Choc chip cookies & summer spelt cake. Can't recommend this book highly enough.

Love this book - unlike some other baking books I've tried, the recipes actually work. Nice level of detail in the recipes - gives times to beat ingredients, descriptions of how the mixture should look, etc, making for foolproof baking. Looking forward to trying more of the recipes.

I love cook books and this one is one of the best baking books I own now. It has a great balance of new ideas and some well known recipes and they all turn out brilliantly. I also really like to savoury section which has some lovely lunch recipes.

Beautiful book plus the two recipes I have followed (birthday cake and cinnamon buns) have turned out really well and been great hits! You can tell the writer knows her stuff big time! Love it.

It has been a long time since I have been as excited by a baking/cookery book, as I am with this one. The styling is beautiful and from the introduction it is clear that the book has been written by a knowledgable and talented baker. So far I have cooked two quiches: roasted tomato and sweetcorn; and roasted butternut squash with sage and brown butter. I have never tasted quiche like them, they were wonderful. I have also been very happy with the apricot polenta muffins, the ginger cake and delighted with the yeast-free Cinnamon buns. It is highly likely I will make more of the recipes, if not all of them.

I visit Broadway market regularly and have sampled quite a few of Violet Bakery's cakes so was excited when I heard about her book and try and recreate some favourites at home. I've already made quite a few things and all have worked well and been popular. Each recipe seems to have its own twist making it a bit different to the norm. My boyfriend was excited to see so many savoury bakes and it is refreshing. I also like that she uses a variety of flours in her recipes beyond plain and self-raising - the rye brownies are a new favourite!
The layout of the book is pleasant with different bakes for different times of day so you could find something for any occasion or any excuse! Great photos as well but not surprising given her background.

This book has added somethinf new to my collection and I'm keen to try more.

I am afraid that this is a case of the emperor having no clothes! Were these recipes actually tested? Lemon drizzle and the brownies (so good she kept them in from the previous book??) took absolutely forever to cook and were nothing special. Brownies were too sweet and there are more reliable recipes for lemon drizzle out there. After an hour in the oven the inside was still not done. (It recommends 50 minutes at 160 fan ). The buckwheat biscuits were nice but the picture in the book must have been something else! The egg yolk cookies are lovely but there are far too many cookie recipes throughout the book and I doubt if most of the recipes in this book will ever be made. So disappointing...........there are much better baking books out there!
