About the Author

A California native, Claire Ptak worked as a pastry chef for Alice Waters at Chez Panisse in Berkeley before moving to London in 2005. She staged in restaurants including Moro and St. John before starting Violet, her stall on Broadway Market in east London. Claire opened the Violet Bakery in 2010. Jamie Oliver said Claire is ‘his favourite cake maker in the whole world’. Claire is also a food writer and stylist whose work includes Ottolenghi’s weekly Guardian column, Observer Food Monthly, Jamie Magazine, Kinfolk, and Vogue. She has published three cookbooks, The Home-Made Sweet Shop, The Whoopie Pie Bookand Leon: Baking & Puddings.

I am Claire Ptak, an American pastry chef living in London. I founded and run the Violet Bakery in East London and I am also a food stylist, prop stylist, and columnist for the Guardian newspaper. I have written 4 cookbooks and am constantly coming up with new ideas and recipes for my column and for my bakery. I also have a podcast called Violet Sessions where my friend the broadcaster Danielle Radojcin and I interview women who are doing enviable jobs about how they got there and what makes them tick. We also find out what their favourite cake is in the process. Formerly of Chez Panisse restaurant in California, I moved to London in 2005 and founded Violet Cakes as a market stall featuring delicious, American-style cakes and treats made with seasonal, natural, and organic ingredients. Then in 2010, I opened Violet, my acclaimed bakery and café in Hackney. Violet has been featured in British Vogue, American Vogue, Timeout, the New York Times, Bon Appetit, Food and Wine, Savour and the Wall Street Journal. Fashion Blogger Susie Bubble visited Violet on Monki TV and Jamie Oliver calls me his "favourite cake maker in the whole world".

I visit Broadway market regularly and have sampled quite a few of Violet Bakery's cakes so was excited when I heard about her book and try and recreate some favourites at home. I've already made quite a few things and all have worked well and been popular. Each recipe seems to have its own twist making it a bit different to the norm. My boyfriend was excited to see so many savoury bakes and it is refreshing. I also like that she uses a variety of flours in her recipes beyond plain and self-raising - the rye brownies are a new favourite!
The layout of the book is pleasant with different bakes for different times of day so you could find something for any occasion or any excuse! Great photos as well but not surprising given her background.

This book has added somethinf new to my collection and I'm keen to try more.
