Jeremiah O’Connell has crossed the pond, but finds that LA is no different to Essex in many ways. Drug dealers push their wares and act with impunity. When one particular gang crosses swords with Jerry, it’s time for a bit of limey payback.
Some of the US ‘misunderstandings’ with Brits are covered and they set the tone nicely. In terms of what Jerry is after though, everything is crystal. And, although you never thought any different, it’s made clear as the story progresses that there will be no rematch; this is last man standing stuff.
The author, a former doorman, brings plenty of inside nous to his writing. It’s easy to paint bouncers as thugs in cheap suits but there are some dos and don’ts which make for very sobering reading. In Jerry’s case, it’s not so much fighting dirty if it’s called for, it’s doing the necessary right from the get go. There are some well crafted set pieces, plenty of humour and the dialogue is a fiesty fusion of estuary English and LA gangsta.
And as three men discovered in Rettendon in 1995, Essex justice is served hard and fast.
