I am a Make-up Artist from Norway. I love working with fashion, hair- and make-up styles from all decades, but mostly from the 20`s and up till today. This book is GREAT! I love it! But, there is a but. The book is not accurate, for the kind of make-up we vere using here in Europe, in the 40`s. I think the americans were a little bit ahead of us in some ways, and that the authors took their inspiration from America. But I highly recommend this book all the same, and hope there will come more books like this!!!

This book is really good. You get 4/5 looks from each period such as girl next door, sophisticate, pin-up etc. and even though the book is only slim you do get a hell of a lot of information so that you can feel confident that you really will be nailing these looks. It's really about the shapes - the shapes of the brows, the lips, the eyes that are explained, as well as application how they did it then and the modern method of getting the same effect. And there's colour info too, i.e what colours were popular in the period and more specifically for each look. Since buying, reassuringly, I've not found anything that comes close.

Is wonderfully detailed on techniques, styles and colours. From 20s through to the 50s, which makes it an excellent reference guide for anyone interested in these eras or anyone who wants to use it as a guide for plays, films etc.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good idea very poorly executed 1 Jan. 2002

As a lover of retro looks, I was disappointed in this poorly done, hastily put together book. In addition to an extreme number of proofreading errors, all the photos are black and white, and the instructions are just plain lousy. The 'color swatches' on the back are difficult to figure out, and a lot of the colors that are discussed in the book aren't there. Instead, you get a lot of colors that aren't brought up in the book. Is this intentional, or another proofreading gaffe? Worse yet, the ultra-short 'Vintage Colors on the Market' chapter doesn't give modern day color equivalents, although it does name a few high-end cosmetics manufacturers. I wish the authors had gone the extra step of listing a few suggested modern day products and color names alongside each makeup plan. How hard could that have been? These women are supposed to be experts on the subject.
I hope someday someone else writes a less sloppy work on this same subject. Until that day, I'd suggest you save your money and forget this book. There are helpful sites on the internet that will give you better information -- in color -- for free.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource for a retro look! 31 Dec. 2006

I cannot believe I lost this on the BART train on my way to visit a makeup artist!

This booklet helped me achieve exactly the type of look with authenticity of makeup color for the time, etc. that I was looking for. For every period, there were several looks, from innocent to siren, that gave you a wide range of authentic period styles to copy for.

I am not willing to pay $250 to replace my copy at this time, but I REALLY feel a tremendous loss to not have this as a resource.

Now I know how different the youthful Audrey Hepburn's eyebrows were, say from those of Elizabeth Taylor. And when I want Audrey's eyebrows, I want hers--not Liz's. They really were quite different and GORGEOUS!

Goes in detail for each decade. Wonderful if you want to attempt reproducing those looks at home. I highly recommend it as well as Hairstyling 40's from the same author. A good bible on the subject.
