Product Description

The first Vinbrite wine filter was originated way back in 1966. Over the years, this filter kit has constantly been updated to keep at the forefront of home wine filtration.

As we have for some time been researching new filter media, the Vinbrite filter kit has now been slightly modified to include certain changes that will considerably increase its performance.

As a result, we have now achieved a much faster flow rate whilst also producing an increased throughput of filtered wine. This has been the result of constant research into new filter media and the inclusion of a venting system for the filter body.

There are 3 pads available for the Vinbrite, the Premium grade Crystalbrite, Fine grade Filtabrite and coarse grade Prime Pads (which will help remove stickily particles that would block filter pads) and all are extremely efficient when compared to any other wine filtering media.

The Vinbrite instruction express that winemakers make sure that fermentation is completed before filtering. Whenever gas bubbles are seen rising in the transfer tube, this indicates that the wine is still working. In such cases, filtering should be stopped and the wine ferment out completely.

However, winemakers are often impatient and will frequently try to filter unstable wines. When filtering and handling wine in general, minute gas bubbles may be released as the wine is disturbed resulting in a back pressure build-up in the filter body, which can also affect performance. The revised filter kit has now been designed to enable the winemaker to release any trapped air whilst filtering via the vent tube and tap.

The updating of this unique filter kit will keep the Vinbrite to the forefront of home wine filtration and will enable winemakers to filter wine more quickly to professional standards.

After opening the box and reading through the instructions I wasn't too clear on what effects the different filter pads had and which way round the prime pad filter went. I decided to look on youtube and after searching for "The Vinbrite Filter Kit" I quickly found a video from the manufacturer - it's about 15 minutes long and certainly worth a watch. It explains what the different filters do and how to install them properly. I recommend you watch this video.
In a nutshell, you fit the 'prime pad' so that the rougher side faces the unfiltered wine. The prime pad is used to filter out the larger particles that may clog either of the other 2 filters - so you can view the prime pad as a pre-treatment before filtration. The video I have added is of the flow of wine through the prime pad - it took about an hour for the 5 gallon of wine to pass through it.
The choice of which of the other two filters you use is up to you - the video suggests that the best filtration will be achieved using the Filtabrite pad but it will take the longer to do. The crystalbrite pad is apparently almost as good filtration but works faster. I decided to use the filtabrite pad and it took about 90 minutes. I haven't yet used the crystalbrite pad so cannot state how long it will take but if you are waiting upwards of a month for your wine kit to finish, I would suggest 90 minutes is not a long time to wait so I intend to carry on using the filtabrite pads.
The instructions suggest to wet the pads before you clamp them into the filter body; this seems a good idea as they soften slightly when wet so you should get a better seal around the edge.

Oh ye of little faith! I am a traditionalist winemaker come into the modern world of winemaking after many years away from this great hobby. To start with, I have made several batches of seasonal wines, sloe, blackberry and apple and pumpkin and cinnamon. I have used a very high yield yeast and got some amazing results! The pumpkin and cinnamon cleared out very quickly and I decided to try a Vinbrite Mk3 Filter Kit. I have never used one before, but was very surprised at how easy it was to set up and use. I did use all three pads plus the paper filter with the Crystalbrite filter. It did take quite a while to filter all 8 gallons of the wine, but the results were AMAZING. All 8 galls turned out brilliant and polished. The total cost being 43p per gallon. Not bad. If I decide to re-filter when bottling, then the cost will go up to 63p per gall. I am a very happy bunny. There is however one thing that I will be doing next time I use the filter and that is try and find a plastic tube to fit the bottom of the funnel extending down to the bottom of the demijohn, as I don't like the wine splashing down to the wine below and becoming aerated. That is my only moan! I hope this help you make the same decision as I have done and come up to date with modern practices. Happy winemaking.

First of all, let your wine settle for at LEAST 2-3 days after adding the finings (if you use them) to get rid of the majority of the particulates - otherwise, you stand a good chance of waiting hours for it to get through the filter...if at all.

The first time I used the filter, it all went perfectly. Wine was crystal clear. In fact, I used the filter on 23L of white wine and because of the speed it went through (<10mins), I used the same filter on the another batch of red (yes I know, there is a cross contamination risk!). That too was crystal clear and went through pretty quick also.

The second time I used the kit, I got the mount that holds the pad in place not lined up with little notches inside the filter housing. Might as well had just siphoned direct between buckets. I think this is where one of the other reviewers went wrong. Took it apart, carefully remounted the pad, did it again, perfect results.

Reasonable length of piping provided and a handy pipe constrictor for stopping flow mid-stream.

Highly recommended for giving wine that final polish, both in taste and appearance.

Only drawback, the pads are quite expensive, but if you can get 2x 23L out of each...not too bad at all.

This piece of kit is good at what it does...it dresses wine very well...but no better than my old Boots' filter which unfortunately I cannot get the pads for....evidently it is not viable to produce them any more...that is the only reason for purchasing this type...

Decent instructions and works well. A bit fiddly to get going and you will need a vessel with a smaller neck (demijohn type) to filter into which if doing a 23 litre brew can be a pain but once you get a setup that works for you this produces crystal clear wine. Do make sure you clear your wine properly first though, if you push a cloudy brew through you'll be there for ever!

A little fiddly to set up, and allow one filter pad per demijohn, but produced beautifully clear and bright wine. Very happy with it. Would recommend.

Perfect for filtering homemade wine, making the final product super clear. At 2.5 feet higher on table top 23 litres of wine will filter through a fine grade filtabrite pad in about an hour or so using gravity. So higher the better for the 'from' vessel when starting the syphon : )
