Product Description

Villa-Lobos Conducts Villa-Lobos . Release Date: 05/30/2011 . Label: Emi Classics . Catalog #: 28202 . Saprs Code: ADD . Composer: Heitor Villa-Lobos . Performer: Maurice Cliquennois, Fernand Dufrene, Aline Van Barentzen, Jacques Neilz, ... Conductor: Heitor Villa-Lobos . Orchestra/Ensemble: French National Radio Orchestra, French National Radio Chorus, Jeunesses Musicales Chorus . Number of Discs: 6 . REVIEW: These recordings, made in Villa-Lobos's home from home, towards the very end of his life have provided EMI and its satellite companies with a rich lode on which to draw. They have done comparatively little in the way of issuing single discs. This set has usually appeared complete. Its annals can be traced from a huge 10 LP Pathe-Marconi set (153-14090/9) to the first appearance on a six CD set (CZS 7 67229 2) to the present economically handsome wallet box. This time EMI have added the content of a 7" LP Qu'est-Ce Qu'Un Choros? (recorded live for the Club des Trois Centres, Paris, 29 May 1958). The 12 page EMI booklet gives all the track information - standard fare for bargain boxes of this type - but in addition there's a richly endowed essay by Pierre Vidal which is actually very much worth reading. English only throughout. -- Rob Barnett, MusicWeb International . FOR FURTHER INFO OR TRACK DETAILS PLEASE REFER TO OUR PICTURES.

5.0 out of 5 stars How a Composer Heard His Own Music 26 Feb. 2014
By The Quiet Reviewer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
The six CDs in this box set feature--as the title indicates--Heitor Villa-Lobos conducting his own music. The recordings were made in France with the forces of the French National Radio Orchestra between 1954 and 1959. The set contains the entire cycle of Bachianas Brasileiras (including the legendary recording of No. 5 with Victoria de los Angeles), a selection of the Choros, one piano concerto, one symphony, and suites of music from the film "The Discovery of Brazil," among others. It is a pretty good overview of Villa-Lobos' output, and is probably as close as we'll get to hearing how the composer might have heard the music in his head as he wrote: among other factoids, the booklet tells us that Villa-Lobos would demonstrate to the members of the orchestra how to play passages when his French failed, since he apparently could play every instrument except the oboe.

The recordings pre-date stereo, which has both advantages and drawbacks. On the plus side, the clarity of monaural recording allows the counterpoint and the rhythmic details of the Bachianas Brasileiras to come through cleanly--not unimportant given that the entire purpose of that exercise was to demonstrate Villa-Lobos' affinity and reverence for the music of Bach. On the negative side of the ledger, it frequently flattens out the orchestral color that was also such an important part of Villa-Lobos' musical vocabulary: this is most obvious in the big showpieces like the Discovery of Brazil suites and the Piano Concerto No. 5. There are a few recordings where the sound is unaccountably boxy (especially the suites and the Bachianas Brasileiras No. 2); in other recordings, a slightly recessed mono sound adds to the musical experience. This is especially true of the Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 which sounds completely otherworldly, aided by Victoria de los Angeles' coolly elegant singing. This recording alone is indispensable and makes the set worth purchasing, especially if you don't have EMI's previous Great Recordings of the Century release.

A newcomer to Villa-Lobos might be better off acquiring some of the fine stereo recordings of this music, to hear it in all its sonic splendor. But to those who already know this music and want to hear what the composer thought of it, this bargain set is a must-have. Like the recordings of Rachmaninoff playing his own piano concerti, hearing the restraint and elegance the composer brings to music that is often interpreted as overripe exotica adds depth to our understanding of these works. These may be "historical" recordings, but they are still vibrant and necessary today.

5.0 out of 5 stars A necessary audition. 25 Feb. 2014
By Santiago Rivero - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Probably most of us have not heard before músic of Heitor Villa Lobos. That was my case, and trying to define are so difficult. Villa Lobos skips boundaries and styles so I can say try and enjoy. It is and enjoyable experience, this package is a reedition of music that Villa Lobos recorded in the 50 when he was living in Paris. You coul hear his voice too!
