It came with a flaw caused by a bang during delivery which meant the slot where the wheel was to be attached to the mainframe needed to be altered. But the seller reimbursed me in excess of what it cost to fix so all in all I was happy.
As an adult it's been mountain bikes all the way but for a long time now I've fancied the idea of a fixie bike but never took the plunge until I spotted this one from Vilano. After much shopping around on the net this one seemed like a bargain compared to the other more expensive fixie bikes so I thought I'd give it a go! I ordered the red trim/black frame as I thought it looked the business plus it reminds me of the old corgi batmobile!
I have uploaded a few pics to show it in real life! How it looks delivered and built.
It came in a big box and very well packed. Lots of protective cushioning around the frame/wheels. In the box was a bike multi tool - front and rear reflectors and an instruction booklet. As somebody who has fixed and messed about with bikes for donkeys years it took me around an hour to get this together and roadworthy. It's actually not difficult at all just take your time.
A brief description of what you need to do upon delivery . . .
- Remove all packaging (of course!)
- Attach seatpost/seat (one bolt)
- Attach handle bars (four bolts)
- Tighten the handlebar stem so the things don't spin around (one bolt)
- Attach back wheel (two nuts) you have a choice here . . .the wheel comes attached so you can free wheel when you stop peddling. Or you can flip it around to the fixed gearset and now when you stop peddling the pedals just keep on moving!
- Attach front wheel (two nuts)
- Tighten brake pulls on handlebars (one nut each).
- Pump your tyres up! These have presta valves and are rated to 70 psi. I pumped mine upto 60psi and they are rock hard.
- Adjust the brakes (hellllp!)
Now you're ready to roll! Cool.
How did it ride?
Very nice ride indeed. I love the thin profile tyres and added to the lightweight frame you can get some real speed out of this thing! It's a smooth ride and perfect for urban biking from A to B. I bought this mainly for biking to work and doing the odd nightride from my house into Liverpool city centre which is roughly ten miles one way.
There's two things that I didn't like but they did not take anything away from how the bike feels on the road. . .
1 - I wasn't a big fan of the seat. Quite hard on the butt/underneath. So I had a better seat that I put straight on, no problem.
2 - Not a big fan of the brake blocks supplied either. I've changed em for some wet and dry type (off an old mountain bike!)
Now the bike is perfect.
What I love about this bike is that it's stripped bare. No mudguards, no gears to mess up and keep adjusting. You can interchange wheels - seats - handlebars at little cost and basically build your own bike up to exactly how you want it. I also love it's light weight. This thing can move if you put some effort in.
Yup, this is a great, low maintenance, high spec, lightweight urban bike. I highly recommend this one - love it!
Update 15th Feb 2017 - I've had this for just shy of a year now. I've done 4000 miles on this bike as of yesterday (yup I biked to the girlfriends with her Valentines card!) I have used and abused this bike something rotten! Hail - rain - muddy roads - gravel paths - through industrial estates with debris riddled potholed roads and it hasn't let me down once! No punctures (I keep my tyres rock hard as this thing can shift) - gear chain has been good. It is now showing spots of rust but it has been hammered and I can get a new one for under a tenner from here. I rode it as a fixie for months but flipped the rear wheel so I could use the brakes as the roads around here are just too dangerous. Because I did this the action of the brake blocks on the painted wheels has rubbed a thin line of red off, but. . . this takes nothing from the ride although the cosmetic look of the wheels is now spoiled a tad but they still look good! People still comment on it though asking where I got it from as it is a great looking bike!
I can still warmly recommend this bike. I'm tempted to buy another in a different colour.
Happy safe cycling for 2017 everyone!
Delivery was a bit chaotic but all got fixed quickly, thanks for the help. And I can't seem to tighten the cranks good enough...
Overall perfect commuter bike, I may upgrade it with a bullhorn bar soon :)
