The wheel rims are NOT anodized - for people that don't know what this means, it means they've advertised cheap, painted rims as expensive quality non-painted ones. This is a problem because it decreases the braking efficiency by quite a lot - so braking isn't the easiest thing to do and requires a lot of power. It's interesting because some of the other Vilano single speed bikes (like the red one) DOES come with anodized wheels and it's great, so I would recommend going for that one. This one however sadly does not, and I'm very against their false advertising here since it's an important issue.
Other than that, it's ok. The best thing about this bike is that it rides smoothly, and has good speed.
However, it's generally fairly cheap. I ordered separate pedals, tyres, handle bars, bell and a seat, and then just custom built the bike, because the ones that came with the bike were pretty rubbish quality to be honest. The bell especially barely made a sound.
It's also very difficult if not impossible to build yourself if you've had no bike working experience before, and you'd definitely have to take it to a bike mechanic to build it for you which would cost about £50. I built it myself and even given my experience it took my a good few hours.
Overall verdict: I love my customized and modified version, but I wouldn't recommend going for the original - just bad quality and not really worth the price. You're better off going for one of their other bikes, e.g. the red one, that actually has the parts its advertised as having. Or a different, better bike.
I include a photo of the final bike I built, although this comes with a lot of extra parts not in the original package, so the bike wouldn't really look much like this apart from the frame and wheels.
It arrived in 48hrs in 2 well packed boxes. I took it to my local bike shop, who assembled it for £20. I'm sure you could do it yourself, but I didn't want to leave anything to chance. Even they said what a good bike this is, especially considering the price. I opted to so straight to "fixed wheel", which is taking a little getting used to. But you could opt for "single speed" if you so wished.
It's out the back of my shop as I write this, & I'm counting the minutes until I can cycle home on it...It also catches my eye every time I walk past it! A great bike that performs as good as it looks, it will get under your skin in next to no time!
The frame is definitely it's strong point; stiff, well made and well finished. The components, such as brake calipers, chain ring, and wheels, are not quite up to the same spec as the frame. Although perfectly serviceable, these components are little flimsy. It's hard to knock the bike for the components though, as you are getting a full bike with flip-flop hub for under £200 delivered. And Black Dog Bikes after sales service really is excellent. Rest assured, they deal with issues quickly, and seek to resolve the problem with as little grief as possible if something isn't up to scratch.
Be aware, the gearing is quite high, (46/16 I believe) which is great for speed with the deep dished 45mm rims. Although some may feel it a bit of a task to get going, especially if you live in a hilly area where you do a lot of stop start riding.
Considering the price, it's a pretty decent package with everything you need to get you started on riding a fixed gear bike (or freewheel bike by simply turning the rear wheel around). That being said, the tyres are a particularly poor quality set of nylon jobs that you'll want rid of as soon as possible. They're incredibly heavy and rigid to ride on. They offer both, very poor rolling resistance and grip levels in both wet and dry conditions, and in my opinion should be replaced straight away. Don't let that put you off though, for around £25 you can get a set of Continental Race tyres and still come in under £200 for the whole package (minus the very reasonable £10 delivery charge), and I'd definitely recommend factoring that into your purchase from the get go.
