5.0 out of 5 stars excellent 19 Aug. 2012

I will be brief: this is cultural history at its best. Every fact ferreted out, compiled elegantly and told with wit. A pure delight to read. The chapter on George Webbe Dasent is a must-read for any lover of Njals saga.

Very educational and interesting but some sentences are not easily read by use of latin and other languages inside of the English sentence. Sometimes puts me to sleep after reading only a few pages due to the lengthy names and specifics of some events. Good nightly read.
5.0 out of 5 stars A vigorous read regarding Vikings and the Victorians 10 Dec. 2015

I completely enjoyed this book. It's superb scholarship but often reads like page-turning narrative.
