The book has been written with the 'academic' in mind and can be considered quite dense if read cover-to-cover. The book has many photographs and maps, though none in colour, which is a pity as it does not do the Norse grave goods depicted any justice.
This book covers nearly everything that you need regarding the Vikings in Scotland; Scotland before the Vikings, the Norwegian background, Norse Graves, societies, economics, settlements, trade, agriculture and fishing, Runes, place-names and religion. There are also countless Case-Studies helping to bring the whole picture of Viking Scotland together.
This is a good starting point for anyone interested in the archaeology left in Scotland by the Vikings.
