This is an exceptionally useful, well-written and interesting book. It comes as a welcome corrective to the usual emphasis on 'Viking swords' or 'Viking boats', employing the antler composite comb as a way of exploring the environment and the economy of the wider Viking world. Ashby draws on deep knowledge of and sympathy with his subject to show us how craftspeople and comb-users interacted with their social and natural environments. He wears his knowledge lightly, however: the style is positively conversational at times, and although the book draws on much archaeological theory it is never jargon-laden. Enthusiasm for the subject shines from every page. It is also well-illustrated, and has proper notes, bibliography and index. Suitable for every level of interest, and a model for other authors and publishers to follow.
