This book is basically a companion book to a Chicago River Cruise. This cruise takes you down (or is it up?) the Chicago River, under the bridges, and around the buildings built on the water. Not everyone realizes that Chicago has many buildings that are built right on the river, similar to Venice, Italy. The buildings on each side of the river are connected by a series of bridges. On the cruise, you are able to see various buildings that are examples of Chicago's magnificent architecture. Each building that you will probably see on this cruise is photographed for the book and comes with information which may include historical data, explanation of the architecture, photographs of buildings from years ago and from recent times, and more. The writings, though, are short and limited, more like brief paragraphs. If you have not been to Chicago, or if you have been but not taken a Chicago River cruise, this may prompt your interest in visiting this fabulous city or getting on a cruise boat some time that you are there. Even if you don't do either, those interested in architecture and city history will probably also enjoy this book.

Excellent resource with beautiful photography

The book follows the actual Chicago River tour and gives a brief history of each of the buildings on the route. It's like bringing the docent home with you. There is just enough information to make it interesting. I took the tour recently and this is serving as a memory book for me. I could not capture each and every building with my camera the way the book does. I heartily recommend it.

Haven't had a chance to use this book yet, but it looks like it will provide some good information when we finally take our boat for a cruise on the Chicago River.

Great book. I bought two copies, one for me and one for a gift. We were in Chicago this summer and took the architectural boat tour. Very interesting! The book reminds me of what we were told on the boat ridfe.
