Very good delivery service.
I haven't, and am feeling quite miffed at missing out... :-)
So I got hold of this guide, to REALLY rub in what I had been missing...
And I am really impressed with this guide.
This series seems to fall half way between the very pretty, lots of pictures, style of the DK guides, and on the other end of the scale, the black-and-white, wordy, back-packers Rough Guides.
I have read some other guides to the same place, and from my perspective, this Marco Polo version is the best of both worlds.
Plenty of colour photos to give you a good feel for the place, but also plenty of descriptive text - in more detail than the DK guide, but not to the in-depth, "how to live on 50p a day by eating the local insects" that you (just joking) get in the Rough Guides.
Comes with a map that you can takeout separately, along with built-in road maps of the local area, and sections on:
- Lists of the best places to go (a good start if you don't have a local guide)
- The usual sections on Hotels and Restaurants
- A list of places to find local goods when Shopping!
- A number of suggested tours for walkers as well as drivers
- Short Introduction to the history and geography of the area
Great overview of Vietnam - especially for the arm-chair traveller!
Thanks "E" for all the photos... I will get there at some point
Review of: Vietnam Marco Polo Spiral Guide (Marco Polo Spiral Guides)
Price at the time of review: £9.98
> A spiral bound book meaning it is easy to open up and leave the book on a certain page, unlike a spine book which would close on itself.
> Compact size yet large enough to easily read it
> Simple to navigate around the book
> The books gives an indication of prices to enter resorts and also the seasons/times of the year they are open.
> There are important phone number throughout e.g. for taxi firms, car rental, hotels, resorts etc.
> At the back of the book there is a pull out map which is perfect to carry in a money travel belt on a day out.
The book's contents:
> TOP 10 - this is a section featuring the top 10 destinations or things to do in Vietnam.
> THE VIETNAM FEELING - this gives a feel for the place.
> THE MAGAZINE- a section which showcases the best parts of Vietnam.
> FINDING YOUR FEET - This section gives an overview of how to settle into your new environment. It gives important info such as departing the airport with a car rental or other transport links including buses. Next it gives information about what types of accommodation are available which gives an idea about the types of places you could stay. The next section is detailing the types of food and drink you may find. This is very useful when planning a holiday as it can be hard to adapt to the food abroad and having this rough guide is a good indicator as to whether it would suit you or not. Shopping is the next section which gives details about where to shop, info on duty free and also a beware sections linking to haggling, and about craft fairs. The final section is entertainment which gives an overview of what's on during different months of the year including festivals and events.
> There are 6 sections for different parts of Vietnam (1. HO CHI MINH CITY & ENVIRONS, 2. MEKONG DELTA, 3. SOUTH COAST & HIGHLANDS, 4. CENTRAL REGION. 5. HANOI & ENVIRONS; & 6. THE NORTH) Each of these sections have the same layout and give guidance on: getting your bearings, the perfect day, the top 10 things to do, things to do at your leisure, more places to explore, where to eat, where to drink, where to shop and where to go out.
> WALKS - This section gives walking information of 4 areas: Saigons Chinatown; Climbing the marble mountains near da nang; from sa pa to the red dao of ta van.
> PRACTICALITIES - This is a very helpful section which specifies what you need to know before you go (what you need e.g passport, health documentation; when high/low season is; time changes; currency/foreign exchange), what you need to know when you are there (dates of national holidays; opening hours of shops etc; keeping in touch such as what a post box looks like; health services etc) and then useful words and phrases (numbers; greetings; accommodations phrases; directional phrases; days of the week; emergency phrases; restaurant phrases; and also a menu reader.
> ROAD ATLAS - the key includes: motorways; dual carriageways; trunk roads; main roads; secondary roads; dirt roads; lanes; footpaths; airports/ferries; marina/places of interest; castles; churches; museums; lighthouses; golf courses; monuments; swimming/beaches; diving/wind surfing; top 10 mark linking to the first sections; don’t miss spots linking to the earlier sections and also at your leisure spots linking to the previous sections.
