Vierne most overlooked of the great organ composers (me included) this sets Vierne at the top of the pile, some fools have mentioned a slight problem with the sound...... how do they know this ? they read about it in the notes.... otherwise they would never have noticed.. the recording quality and microphone placement is at the limit closest to perfection, some people would arrive in heaven and criticise god because of one spec of dust on the throne.. also check out Viernes 24 pieces of fantasy for organ for organ emotion taken to new heights, listen to cathedrales and Sur le rhin and you will believe or you are a fool

Disappointing recording

Much as I like Vierne, and appreciate the Cavaille-Coll organ, this recording is very echo-ey and all the detail is lost in an auditory impressionistic fog. Although I have good audio equipment (Astin Trew) every disc in this set is disappointing. My set went to Oxfam; still looking for a good clean recording.

Music from a brilliant, but anguished composer

Vierne's life was filled with tragedy, sudden death, and betrayal. Much of his pain comes out in his organ music. I keep thinking as I listen that if the Phantom of the Opera had a favourite organist, it would be Vierne.

While it's not as accessible as some French organ music of this period, repeated listenings are rewarded with new delights with each time. As with all organ music, the instrument on which it was recorded is as important as the interpretive skills of the organist. In this case, neither the organ nor the organist disappoints. The organ is the Cavaille-Coll at St Ouen de Rouen and while there's some background noise from the organ that's apparent in the quieter parts of the recording, it doesn't detract from the overall enjoyment. The organ is well-suited to this type of music -- hardly surprising given that it's the type of organ that Vierne himself played during his 40 years as organist at Notre-Dame de Paris.

The 3-disk set is enclosed in a well-designed case with a 13 page booklet (all in English except for a number of annoying and unnecessary insertions of French terms). At a price of $22 for 3 and 3/4 hours of music, this is a true bargain.

qui lui a donné ses plus belles lettres de noblesse. Ses symphonies explorent et explosent toutes les facettes du divin instrument: tremblements, flous cristallins , crescendos titanesques , poésie ondulatoire. Aucun autre instrument,l'orgue est symphonique.
Interprétation sublime de Jérémy Filsell. A écouter chez vous , et,
si vous avez l'occasion , dans une église: on en ressort ébloui,
décoiffé , décapé!

To hear these compositions, many of which were written with this organ in mind, has been a revelation. Cavaille-Coll was heard to say that the organ at St. Ouen was his greatest creation. The recording is clear and without any distortion. Organist Jeremy Filsell pulls out all the stops to show the breadth of this instrument. I have him playing the Rachmaninoff transcriptions on the new organ at Philadelphia's new concert hall (also on Signum) and, again the, sound and playing are first rate.

The booklet gives a good bio of composer, L. Vierne, and performer, Jeremy Filsell. Also there are excellent descriptions of each symphony, and a listing of the organ registrations. The booklet would have been better had it featured pictures of the organ, composer, and performer. Recommended for those who enjoy French Romantic symphonic organ music.
