I had my doubts about this microphone but it performed well on my Nikon D3300. It is mono but that means it is more 'directional' and seems to give a clear natural sound just as one would expect from a professional video. The 'dead cat' really does work well as I can verify from recordings made on the balcony a ship in 56 knot winds - there was no wind noise at all resulting from the microphone. The only thing I don't really like about it is the bright red cable - it looks naff! The dead cat is essential but does look a little over the top - nonetheless it works.

This little thing is great for the amateur film maker. Screw it into the mount on the top of your DSLR and it provides fantastic sound. I originally had my heart set on the Rode Videomic Pro, but I'll explain why I chose this microphone.

PROS:
This provides equal or superior sound to the Videomic Pro, and saved me well over a hundred pounds in the process. It also includes a deadcat and the new shock mount which I would have had to pay more for on the Videomic Pro. The small size of the microphone is great for the travelling film maker. The lack of the battery required really makes this a great microphone as you don't have to worry about the battery draining.

CONS:
The warranty is for only 2 years, compared to the Videomic Pro's 10 years. However, I don't think the target buyer for this product will use it or abuse it as much as one might with the other model so this may not be an issue. This microphone sounds great with the deadcat, but without sounds like a... dead cat. The capsule is so sensitive that it is unusable without the shield.

If you're looking at this microphone you've most likely looked at the Videomic Go. All I can say is that looking at reviews and reading articles, the Videomic Go sounds awful in comparison - not to mention this model is cheaper.

Works very well on my Canon 600d, and I can't recommend it enough!

Item arrived before due date. Exactly as described and illustrated. Haven't had a chance to use in all conditions but all YouTube reviews very positive. Whether its being an Australian product that makes the difference but it's nice to buy at the equivalent price in dollars.
Update :
Regretfully after posting a good review of this product I have to report a failure. Having had it for around six months, with occasional use, the loop frame holding the mike, snapped on one side at the peak of the arc. One YouTube reviewer mentions the apparent fragility of this frame but assumed, as I did, it was up to the job. I've tried to get hold of a replacement but with no luck and repairing it with epoxy resin did not work. Perhaps a wire embedded in the plastic would have prevented the breakage
I have deducted two stars.

I wasn't sure whether something that costs so little, relatively speaking, could be any good. Well was I in for a pleasant surprise? On the times that I used my DSLR for video I used this mic and the results were far better than I expected. Even when replayed through a decent sound system it was readily apparent just how well the fur wind sock worked and the mic did a marvellous job in separating the stereo channels.

This mic is fantastic value, if you are ever going to record a video with a DSLR or prosumer video camera and have a mic input you MUST use an external mic. This is the least you'll have to spent to get great results. Far better than a lot of more expensive rivals and incredibly small. This stays in my camera bag at all times.

Great sound for such a small device, we had been using a cheaper version and have now had to stop using the old footage in compilations that have sound as the difference in quality is too great. There will be other microphone types that are better at most things but the versatility this mic gives without the need to bring lav mics, radio packs, booms means that it's a must for us and our needs. We've used it indoors directly fed into the mic input on a Canon 650D in an open office environment but I did some sample testing outside with the dead cat on and it sounded good there too.

I use a digital SLR for video work and wanted something small and handy for family videos. The Rode mic is excellent and comes with a dead cat cover for attenuating wind noise. I did A/B testing with it and found it really good for near-field directional work. It's now permanently attached to my camera and makes a huge difference to simplicity and quality. Very highly recommended.
