Being a typical man geek I naturally had to research "what I need to cook properly". A good set of knives are always at the top of the list. Obviously I needed to buy 3 Globals immediately. I also decided on a "back up" chef's knife for cruder jobs where I didn't want to "risk" my Global.
A "Which" review rated this as a "best buy" - just behind the Global but a quarter of the price. Perfect, I thought.
Globals arrive. I touch the blade edge of the chef's knife lightly with my thumb. I can tell it's close to razor sharp and tbh is quite frightening. I didn't realise what a sharp knife was prior to this experience.
The Victorinox arrives. I do the same test. I can tell immediately it's not razor sharp out of the box. "Meh", I think. Never mind. Only £20.
I go and try it out in the real world. Whoosh! It slices thro everything I throw at it (including tomatoes) with barely any pressure. I'm very impressed. This is a bloody good knife. I know it's not as sharp out of the box as the Global...but if I'd known it was this good I wouldn't have bothered getting the Globals. I can only imagine how good the Globals will be as I'm waiting till I move flat before I use them in anger.
So to sum up. Want a great knife for no money? Buy this. Simple!
Oh, and another thing for those in a similar situation to me. Forget those big "value" packs of knives. Three really good ones of different sizes will cover 90% of what people like us will practically do in the kitchen!
This knife was recommended by my main influencer: my Mom. She told me it is better to buy the knifes you really want and then buy a block later that way you get the stuff you want and need instead of a set that you don’t know all the aspects of. Not too long ago she did loads of research making her kitchen set at home and this knife was one of the knifes that made it through her long and thorough research and I must say. It is the best knife I’ve used in a long time! This is the only large knife I have in my new kitchen for now but so far I’ve been able to use this knife for all my cutting needs: cutting vegetables, meat, fruit, cheese… It does it all. Alto I have only used it for about 3 weeks now I can tell that the knife will last a long time. I might have to sharpen it after a while but that is normal from my perspective. It is easy to clean too. When I spot some room in my dishwasher it will go in anyway but when I run out of space this is the first item I take out to clean by hand. It arrived with a little plastic sleeve over the knife and then wrapped in bubble wrap.
It is not the fanciest knife out there when it comes to design but when you want a good knife that is easy to clean and don’t really need a special design then this might be a great choice for you!
The handle is plastic, and feels a little cheap and is very lightweight, but is comfortable to hold and easy to use. The blade is not full tang, stopping halfway down the handle, and is stamped as opposed to forged. However, it holds its own against other far more expensive knives I've used.
The blade is a magnet for fingerprints and I believe isn't dishwasher safe so will need regular handwashing in warm soapy water. It would also be wise to keep it in the sleeve it comes in, to protect the knife and yourself!
Buy this and a paring knife, and all other knives just become incidentals.
