This is, in fact, an excellent slice of social history, written and photographed in the 1870s, highly descriptive of London life at the time. I think the above reviewer is a little confused - the photographs are familiar because three or four of them (eg. 'The Crawlers') have been used repeatedly by other publications, exhibitions etc. ever since. Nonetheless, this is a reprint of the original 1870s publication in which said photographs appeared, and well worth your money.

I'm writing this short note for anyone who thinks this might be one of those books that has a photograph on almost every page. That's what I expected, and I was slightly disappointed.

The Book has 134 pages. However, there are just over 30 photos in the book (and a few of those are half-page pictures).

The accompanying text is interesting and informative, and I certainly don't regret buying the book - but don't buy it expecting it to be a large collection of pictures.

This book gives a contemporary view of the London of the Victorian Age and includes not only the opinions of the author but of the characters themselves in their own words. These latter accounts provide a valuable insight into these momentous times and the perceptions of the man on the street

I have just received my book this morning, and I can't put it down. I am a fanatic on any thing to do with the victorian era. This book is very interesting, and unusual, as it is based on the people who are actually in the photographs.
Would recommend to all!!!..................and I have not even finnished the book yet!

Street Life in London (to give it its original title) was first published in 1877 in 12 parts, and then in an abridged version (with fewer photographs) as Street Incidents. My Great Grandfather's copy of the latter sold at a well known London auction house for four figures, about two decades ago. Ever since then I have been on the lookout for a good facsimile to replace it, so was delighted when I happened accross this very nicely priced edition. Of course you can never really replace an original so cheeply. My Great Grandfather's copy was a hard back, with gold embossing on the cover; this is a thin paperback. On the plus side however, the text pages of the original were of extremely poor quality paper and had become brittle. Every turn of the page ran the risk of damaging it. No such problems with this addition. One slight disapointment is that the photographs are reproduced in black and white. The original 'Woodburytypes' (an early photomechanical process), were a rich brown colour. Early photographs always look better when reproduced in the original sepia tones; to do this however involves printing in colour, with substancial increase in costs. Still, I'm glad I bought it, though for the reasons stated it can not be regarded as a true facsimile.

This book really surprised me, I was expecting just a book of old photographs but this book, although hasn't got as many photos as I was expecting, is a joy because for each photo there is a story about the people in them! This really brings the characters to life and is a book I will highly recommend to everyone.

Really enjoyed this book. The pictures and the stories that accompany them are good entertainment. Given I have lots of ancestry in London back past the Victorian era, I could truly imagine what my ancestors were like and how they lived. Gave me lots of joyful moments.

A must buy for anyone interested in Victorian Britain. Every photograph has an accompanying piece of text to go with it with the author also giving details of the names and occupations of those photographed. Excellent book and well worth a buy.
