Product Description

‘Vibrate: The Best of Rufus Wainwright’ features 18 classic songs that define one of modern music’s most innovative talents. Highlights include ‘Going to A Town’, ‘Hallelujah’, ‘The Art Teacher’, ‘Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk’ and a brand new song, ‘Me and Liza’ co - written with Guy Chambers. The bonus disc contains live versions of some of Rufus’ best known songs recorded at Kenwood House in 2010 plus ‘The Maker Makes’ from Brokeback Mountain, ‘La Complainte de la Butte’ from Moulin Rouge, new song ‘Chic and Pointless’, and ‘WW111’, never before available on a physical release. ‘Vibrate: The Best of Rufus Wainwright’ encapsulates a career that is like no other. From the 1998 release of his debut album to ‘Out of the Game’ in 2012, Rufus Wainwright has played it his way, refusing to be categorised while establishing himself as one of contemporary music’s very best songwriters, singers and performers.

I first discovered Rufus Wainwright back in 2004/2005, after a particularly glowing recommendation from the now sadly departed and still greatly missed Word Magazine. After being told in great detail just how excellent he was, I bought what was the latest album at the time, “Want One”, and was completely floored by the genius of that piece of work in a way I hadn't been affected by music for a good few years. The intelligent, artistic lyrics, the beautifully grandiose cross between pop, rock, classical and opera, Rufus' distinctive, powerful and yet expressive voice... it started a love affair with Rufus' music that has continued over the last decade and has only grown in affection (I have to admit, I have a dog called Rufus – that probably gives you an idea of how much I love the man). I read the news last year that Rufus was going to be releasing this “best of” compilation and couldn't help nodding appreciatively that it was a very good time to present an extremely strong overview of his work so far, after sixteen years of releasing albums. Of course, how good it was going to be very much depended upon the track listing, so has Rufus represented his catalogue well with this compilation?

The answer is yes, it's close to perfect. There are a few glaring omissions which I will come to later, but listening to this compilation is nothing other than an immense pleasure, so, as an introduction to Rufus' music it is a genuine success. I bought the double disc deluxe version which, in my opinion, is well worth the extra money thanks to the extra music and the superior packaging. It comes in a rather beautiful looking (CD sized) box, with a booklet full of great photos and pieces of writing from the man himself, as well as family.

About time for a retrospective - I can't understand why Rufus is not mainstream - he is the greatest songwriter on this planet at this moment. If half of the so-called 'popular artists' had half of his talent they would be lucky. Still, his true fans know his worth - long may he continue to please his adoring fans!

Rufus has long been in need of a greatest hits and finally one has hit the market, luckily with (almost) all you could ever want.

The single disc edition is a great welcoming for any newcomer, there are a few glaring omissions such as the Ethan Johns produced 'California' which ranks both among Rufus' most upbeat and catchy songs, '14th Street', a concert staple and again one of Rufus' best, reflecting him in all of his flamboyance, and the masterpiece that is 'Gay Messiah', a work only Rufus could have made. Having said this, if you really enjoy this album you will probably go out and discover these songs anyway as there is not a single album in the Rufus back catalogue that is not to be recommended.

The double disc edition of the album is perhaps a little lacking with all the live takes that, in truth, are not all too exciting however it is excellent to be able to collect the best of the pieces that rufus has done for soundtracks etc. on disc not to mention that the packaging all this is received in is lush! I was expecting a jewel case or digipack but instead received a little box filled with art cards, a wonderful booklet, and my 2 discs in a little elegant digipack. worth the extra investment!

I can't recommend this enough, Rufus is well received by the critics and has gathered many followers however he has never had the commercial success he deserves, this may be the perfect way to earn that.

As usual an experience of different contrasts. Always the musician using his piano skills to offer different styles and genres of music all with lyrics telling stories of people, places and experiences.
How lovely to hear again some of the more popular and well known songs of Rufus Wainwright mixed in with those lesser know numbers that are definitely worth listening to again, with a glass of wine, and a roaring log fire.

Rufus Wainwright has a nasal twang at the end of words. I guess it's NYC which does it. His singing style shouldn't work and yet he's so constantly inventive that you get drawn into his world of watching men read fashion magazines and being friends with Liza Minnelli. I loved everything here! (on the first disk anyway!)

There are indeed some of his best songs on here, but very few in my honest opinion. I feel I agree with 'Going to a Town,' 'Oh What a World,' 'Cigarette's and Chocolate Milk,' 'I Don't Know What It Is,' 'The Art Teacher,' 'Go or Go Ahead,' 'Dinner at Eight,' and 'Sometimes You Need,' 8 out of 18 songs, among his best, but the remaining 10 surprise me. Maybe they serve as a lure towards their original origins, where there are indeed superior songs.

'Me and Liza,' on the standard release, and 'Chic and Pointless' on the deluxe, with a selection of other live songs I guess serve to cater for those that already posses copies of his other works, but they certainly don't add any merit to this particular, or only, 'best of...' compilation, and I certainly wouldn't have considered those songs had they appeared elsewhere first.

In any case, this album may well serve as a good introduction to those less familiar with Rufus Wainwright, but for me it seems to be something of a collection of hits and misses, random odds and sods.

I wouldn't disregard the 5 star reviews of other people, as indeed it's all a matter of taste and preference, but in that regard, for me at least, it fails to deliver.
