Ava has seen her share of outbreaks but this one doesn’t respond to any antibodies and those who’re responsible are a mystery. It’s chemically altered and as the bodies pile up, every agency from the CDC to Homeland Security is on the case. Is it a terrorist attack or something deadlier? Working with River sets her body aflame but she promised herself she’d never trust her heart to a soldier again. Can he be trusted or is it just a fling?
I’m a huge fan of Julie Rowe and this is her best book yet! The stakes couldn’t be higher and the attraction between River and Ava set my tablet aflame. You wouldn’t think that being blown up a few times while wearing hazmat suits would be sexy but you’d be wrong. The action scenes were intense and there were times when I was afraid Ava or River might die. There’s plenty of romance, although since many lives are at stake, Ava and River take it whenever and wherever they can. I connected with both Ava and River immediately and almost cried when it ended. I wanted more!
Ripped from the headlines, Viable Threat is an adrenaline-rushing romantic suspense and a must read! The ending left it open for a sequel so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
Disclaimer: I received an ARC from Entangled Publishing and the author via Netgalley in the hopes I'd review it.
Favorite Character/Quote: Ava. I loved how brilliant she is (hello microbiologist) while being tough as nails and yet, there’s a vulnerability when it comes to the opposite sex and love. She’s all business when she first meets River and bristles at his nickname for her. But the more they work together, her walls come down and we catch a glimpse of the real woman underneath.
My Rating: 5+ stars
I LOVED IT. "Romantic Suspense" is sort of a "meh, take it or leave it" genre for me, but THIS book balanced out the "romance" and "suspense" PERFECTLY. It's incredibly well-written with an engaging plot that I absolutely could not get enough of!
Right from the beginning, River tuned in to Ava and they seemed to form a connection and sort of symbiotic relationship that held my attention. They each ended up helping each other in several different ways, and I loved reading how their relationship evolved.
River may be one of my favorite heroes. He is my idealized "military hero," comprised of total badass and a dash of "boy next door" charm. The protectiveness that he felt for Ava was truly endearing, right from the start.
I admired Ava because she kept having these new and downright crazy situations thrown at her but, with River's help, she met these challenges head-on and persevered. Ava was no shrinking violet, but I liked that she relied on River at times.
This was just a spectacular story full of gripping, edge-of-your-seat moments that had me eagerly turning the pages from beginning to end. I will DEFINITELY read more romantic suspense books by Julie!
(I received a copy of this book in consideration of an honest review)
The rush is on to find out who the terrorists are who have infected the students and others of El Paso Uni. This is bio-terrorism at its scariest. River is more than capable of ruining any 'bad guy's' day! He is there to protect the lovely doctor, Ava, in her efforts to collect evidence from the area and try to work out what this thing is that's killing people by the dozens, soon to be hundreds! This needs brain power and smarts. Fantastic!
So many nail biting moments and quite a few laughs too with the retired Drill Sergeant. He is awesome!
Such a well written story and very addictive.
You should read this!

Title: Viable Threat
Author: Julie Rowe
Genre: Thriller, Contemporary Romance
Tick tock tick tock... racing against the clock when it comes to a homegrown terrorist and his followers Dr Ava Lyod and Special Forces medic Walter River find themselves teaming up during a biochemical attack, there's flying bullets and explosions with a touch of insta-lust thrown in too as they try to find the leader behind the chaos. I was on the edge of my seat at times reading this it went from zero to sixty in no time, it was non-stop fast paced action which in this day and age felt only too real.
Julie's impeccable writing leaves little to be desired, I can't believe that this was the first book of hers I've read granted it wouldn't have been my usual genre but I'm glad I gave it a bash.
A great plot with brilliant characters make this one captivating read that will have you absorbed from beginning to end.

The romance side is light and way too fast. The story takes place during 24 hours or so, except for the last chapters 1 or 2 weeks later, so I felt the love declaration happened too soon.
The hero is immediately attracted to the heroine when he first sees her, and she's in a hazmat suit, not the sexiest outfit lol. At first he's determined to see where their relationship goes after everything is under control, but suddenly he changes his mind and decides he's not good enough for her because he was wounded in Afghanistan and has lost some memories. That's one of the stupidest excuses I ever read in a romance novel!
The heroine is more reluctant to have feelings for the hero, even attraction, but only because her fiancé was a soldier who loved danger and died in Afghanistan, and of course she considers all soldiers revel in facing danger like he did. So each time the hero has to do something a bit dangerous to help her or the situation she's angry at him for putting himself in danger. Fortunately that's not often.
The plot is gripping and moving fast, as with the previous series. It's full of details and it's clear the author knows what she's talking about (she used to work in a lab). I was afraid to become fond of a character as I know the author has no qualm about killing every secondary characters, but that was not a problem here. I was wondering about the mastermind's identity for some times when it was finally revealed, but I was surprised as this character wasn't letting anything on.
The only point I thought was overused was the several bombings, and I agreed with the heroine who thought "the absurdity of the past twenty-four hours had gone beyond crazy and into unbelievable."
Definitely a book I would recommend! Suspense, modern day topics (sadly), little romance and mystery of who orchestrated the bio chemical warfare, bombs and started this whole mess. You get the majority of those questions answered but are left with some unanswered to keep you coming back. As long as Ava and River are involved I'll read more!
