A Hidden Gem

Nowadays, this book is one of the Rev Awdry's lesser known books, partly because it wasn't available for a time, and also I expect because these stories didn't make it to the TV screens, but it contains some of the Rev Awdry's most enjoyable stories about the narrow gauge engines. Skarloey and Rheneas are celebrating their 100th birthday, and the first three stories take place in Victorian Sodor in 1865, and are a narrative of Skarloey and Rheneas'es early days on the railway. The final story is back in the present (well, 1965!) and is about their centenary celebration. Artist Peter Edwards really shines in this volume, with some particuarly dramatic, and realistic, illustrations in the flashback stories. This volume is perhaps more suitable for older children, compared with the earlier ones in the series, some of the themes in the book are not really intended for smaller children, and the writing style is clearly more aimed at older children, although it could be said that the later books in the series were more aimed at the more advanced reader, whilst the earliest ones are more universal. Nonetheless, a worthwhile book indeed.
