HASH(0x988bd654) out of 5 stars Super guitar work String-a-Long style 9 April 2000

These guys play my kind of sane guitar music, plenty relaxing and entertaining. Much calmer than a lot of Ventures albums. Wish there was more albums available.

Good old straight ahead guitar instrumentals here! I learned a lot from these guys way back when. In fact I recently worked out "Sentimental Journey" on my lap steel using this CD. So these guys are still helping me out! One of the great instrumental bands of that era for sure. Great music for the car or anytime for that matter. They rank with Duane Eddy, The Ventures, Johnny and the Hurricanes, and the other great bands from early R&R. Highly recommended!

HASH(0x96f26dc8) out of 5 stars Great CD! 19 July 2009
By James E. Rhodes - Published on

This is an excellent CD featuring the greatest hits of the String-A-Longs, a wonderful but sadly little-known instrumental group that recorded in the same Norman Petty Studios that Buddy Holly did. The style is reminiscent of The Ventures, Santo & Johnny, and other great bands of the late 50's/early 60's era. Pop this into the CD player and go back to the days of drive-ins, poodle skirts, saddle shoes and the Eisenhower/Kennedy years. A great sampler from a truly great band.

HASH(0x96efaccc) out of 5 stars CD Reproduction Of A Warwick Vinyl LP - 4 Stars If That's What You Seek 22 Mar. 2013
By George O'Leary - Published on
Format: Audio CD
If you searched for The String-A-Longs you've come to this page showing that there are two CD compilations covering the music of the largely instrumental band from Plainview, Texas - lead guitarist Richard Stephens, rhythm guitarists Keith McCormack and Jimmy Torres, bass guitarist Aubrey de Cordova, and drummer Don Allen - whose efforts were produced mostly for Warwick Records by Norman Petty. The first, from Ace Records of the U.K., is a 1993 28-track volume titled Wheels, Brass Button, Should I And 25 Other Great Instrumentals, and the second a 2000 12-track compilation from Collectables titled The Very Best Of The String-A-Longs Featuring Wheels.

For the difference in price, any collector is better served by the Ace offering. Not only do they provide all 6 sides of their three nationally-charted singles, but they do so with their usual impeccable sound reproduction and copious liner notes (sprinkled with vintage photographs), including a label discography on the reverse. Collectables, on the other hand, in re-producing their only Warwick vinyl album, 1961's "Pick A Hit" (Warwick W2036ST), does not include two of their hits and has just the one B-side. It does have quite decent sound as well and liner notes written by Mark Marymont, but these are nowhere near as detailed as those in the Ace release. If what you want is a CD version of that lone LP, then it's a 4-star effort.

Their big hit, of course, was Wheels. And, unlike most R&R instrumental bands of that era, they not only brought that to the Billboard Pop Hot 100 Top 10 but it also struck a chord with the R&B market. In January/February 1961 it peaked at # 3 Hot 100/# 19 R&B on Warwick 603 b/w Tell The World (some pressings also had Am I Asking Too Much as the flip - it's not part of either CD). Collectables also omits Tell The World.

In April, Brass Buttons made it to # 35 Hot 100 b/w Panic Button on Warwick 625 (Collectables has the B-side but not the hit), and in July they scored their final such entry when their cover of the old 1940 Arden-Ohman Orchestra hit, Should I, topped out at # 10 Adult Contemporary and just missed the Hot 100 Top 40 at # 42 on Warwick 654 b/w Take A Minutes (neither side is part of the Collectables volume).

Of their failed singles, a re-release of Tell The World on Warwick 606 had For An Angel as the flip, but that is not in either CD. However, Ace does provide: Myna Bird/Scottie (Warwick 668 in 1961); Nearly Sunrise (Warwick 675 in 1962) but not the B-side, Theme For Twisters; Twist Watch (Dot 16331 in 1962) but not the flip, Sunday; Spinnin' My Wheels/My Blue Heaven (Dot 16379 in 1962); Mathilda/Replica (Dot 16393 in 1962); Heartaches/Happy Melody ( Dot 16448 in 1963); My Babe (Dot 16575 in 1964) but not the Dot version of Scottie; and omits Caravan (Dot 16708 in 1965) which had a re-release of Mathilda as the flip.

A real snappy collection of instrumentals. I couldn't say which I like best. I really like every tune on this album.
