Product Description

Gilbert O'Sullivan is one of the UK's most successful singers, songwriters and musicians, selling over 15 million albums and singles. To celebrate an amazing forty-five year recording career, Union Square Music are releasing 'The Very Best Of Gilbert O'Sullivan'

Part of a major Gilbert O'Sullivan reissue campaign the album chronicles songs from his debut album, 'Himself' in 1971, through to his most recent album 'Gilbertville' and features no less than 14 top 10 UK hits, including the multi-million selling US chart-topper and Grammy-nominated 'Alone Again (Naturally)' and the unforgettable UK number 1 singles 'Clair' and 'Get Down', the latter of which won him an Ivor Novello Award in 1973 for Most Performed British Song.

Gilbert's first two albums, 'Himself' and 'Back To Front' both stayed in the UK chart for over a year (86 and 64 weeks respectively) and in 1972 Gilbert was the biggest selling UK artist in the world. The incredible success of 'Alone Again (Naturally)' in America catapulted Gilbert into stardom and he made several appearance on US shows hosted by music legends such as Dean Martin and Burt Bacharach.

Gilbert's songs have appeared in TV series including The Simpsons and Life On Mars and in films such as The Virgin Suicides, Stuart Little 2, Margot At The Wedding and Stuck On You. His songs have been covered by acts as diverse as Elton John, Bobby Darin, The Feeling, Nina Simone, Har Mar Superstar, Sarah Vaughan, Andy Williams, The Pet Shop Boys, Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones, and Herb Alpert.

More recently 'Gilbertville', which was released in January 2011, was hailed as one of his finest albums to date, which led critics and the media to suggest maybe it was time to revisit O'Sullivan's career for re-appraisal.

'Smart kitchen-sink lyrics, super melodic songs, his new stuff just as good as his old; if he'd never had a hit, or worn an oversize flat cap, he'd be hailed as our own Randy Newman one who references tea (frequently) and frozen peas (occasionally). At his best, he is the missing link between the Kinks and Squeeze' - The Guardian

Along with the release of 'The Very Best Of', fans will be delighted to know that Gilbert will be performing 18 live dates across the UK from March 17th 2012. He will be joined by his amazing 11 piece band, including a string quartet, to present a stunning two hour plus performance.

The Very Best of Gilbert O'Sullivan - A Singer & His Songs

This is a wonderful collection and PLEASE give this a chance by giving an un-biased listening without subconsciously dismissing this because it is so un-cool to like Gilbert.
I consider myself a cool enough dude in his early 50's with a massive music collection of up to date music and claasics from the 60's though the decades to the present. I heard ' Alone Again' on the radio a few years back and it was so inspiring that , despite myself, I bought the 'Bery Very' Album and was transfixed by the lyrics and melodies.Gilbertville got good reviews and I bought it out of curiosity and REALLY enjoyed it and played it continually in the car..the stories are just great.

So much so ,in fact, that my wife and I are going to see Gilbert at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall in April...can't wait!!

This is another excellent compilation and get some good headphones on, lie back and immerse yourself in this...you know you are worth it, even if you think you might not be!!!

I guarantee you will LOVE this album

David

It is virtually impossible to encompass all of O'Sullivan's best songs within 18 tracks - three discs wouldn't be enough to include the enormous output of his quality songs - but this collection is an excellent introduction to his amazingly original songs written in the 70 & 80s, including some of the most memorable hit songs, like Nothing Rhymed, Alone Again (Naturally), Clair, What's In A Kiss. It also includes the memorable songs like 'We Will ', 'Why, Oh Why, Oh Why' and the heart-achingly wistful songs like 'At The Very Mention Of Your Name', 'Dear Dream' and 'I Wish I Could Cry', written in the late 80s and in the 90s. If you come to love these songs, you will surly buy his all albums and will be on an amazing journey of discoveries.

This eccentric Irish singer-songwriter was a regular visitor to the upper reaches of the UK charts in the early 1970s. Three of these songs made the top ten in the USA: the poignant Claire, Alone Again (Naturally) and Get Down. He specialized in the mid-tempo ballad, although Get Down was a real rocker with a catchy hook. Other UK hits on this compilation include Ooh Wakka Doo Wakka Day, No Matter How I Try, We Will, Ooh Baby, Nothing Rhymed and I Don't Love You But I Think I Like You. What's In A Kiss was a solitary stray hit from the late 70s when his time had passed. The music is not profound but charming enough with its often clever lyrics and decent tunes.

Even Gilbert admits he is out of vouge but his music is just brilliant. This has a song on it called Taking a chance which is sublime. His music speaks for itself, catchy honest and sometimes heartbreaking.Long may he continue.Get the shopkeeper to put it in a brown bag to hide your shame but do it!
Beautiful.

I have to be honest, up until buying this album I had only ever heard the song alone again (naturally), which was a staple on my mums car tape on trips to the seaside when i was a child. So I really did buy this cd on impulse based on the one track. And I have to say i cannot believe what i was missing!

Of course the track alone again is fantastic and sounds just as great as it did when i was a nipper - and I'm thrilled the rest of the album has the same unique style running through it. Already the song 'nothing rhymed' sounds like an old friend, there is something about his distinctive voice which truly moves me, and whilst Gilbert is essentially before my time - I connect to it in a way that i haven't found in the music i have been listening to for a long time. The excellent 'Clair' sounds like a classic lennon/mccartney composition and is another highlight. The funky 'matrimony' and 'get down' already get me bopping around. I could go on all day about each track, and after buying the album friday and only ever hearing these songs 3 times (aside from alone again) they have already stayed with me, and i cannot shift them from my brain. I guess there are probably a few 'best of' releases kicking about, but as a new convert who has just discovered this awesome music this is the best impulse buy cd ever - unique singing, unique songwriting - give this a go :)

I grew up listening to Gilbert. Always wondered how he got his name as I'd never heard it before, and have never heard it again, since. I'd love to know where it comes from.

The music is stunning. Well, the old ones I'm familiar with are. But those I haven't heard before listed here are just as spine-tingly because the person singing them knows how to use his voice. I don't know whether Gilbert was trained to sing or not, but, with his natural accent and natural talent, he just makes his music work. Hopefully, he loves his songs as much as I do. The heartfelt Clair, about his babysitting for a night is funny and warm. Get down, (the dog!) is hilarious and listenable. We will is just so full of emotion that I could never join in. I don't know why, but it's always been a song I've loved, yet, if I try to sing along, I'm in tears to the point where I can't continue. It's playing now, and I'm almost crying. I love the song that much.

These songs had a habit of bringing people together. Just having family in the room to listen makes the home a warm one, whatever the weather. Thank you Gilbert, for not only being able to sing, but for sharing your love of music with the rest of us. It's made my day having this album playing again.
