HASH(0x8e8fe810) out of 5 stars Just To Set The Record Straight 16 July 2005
By R. Mix - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Dear Mr. Kelly, this isn't a Traffic collection. It's a Dave Mason collection. And nowhere on the album's packaging is it stated or implied otherwise.

Furthermore, there ARE two Traffic songs on the disc: "Feelin' Alright" and "Pearly Queen". They're from Traffic's second album, released in 1968. Guess you're quite the fan, eh?

What's more, the Dave Mason songs you list were recorded for an entirely different label (Columbia), and are all from a single album--1977's 'Let It Flow'. Why you would look at a different label's collection for three songs from a single, still-in-print CD is beyond me.

Concerning the 'Very Best Of Dave Mason' itself, it's a solid, budget-line collection for the casual Dave Mason fan.

No, it's not remastered, and there are no liner notes, but you get seven of the eight tracks from his first solo album ('Alone Together'), plus three tracks from his second ('Headkeeper'): the aforementioned Traffic tracks done up live plus that album's title track.

Dave Mason is a fluid, lyrical guitarist, and during the seventies was a deservedly prominent and successful artist. He has a low-key way with a song with arrangements that emphasize melody and texture over hard rock riffage.

The material within is fine, and should the 'Very Best Of Dave Mason' leave you wanting more, any of the first four solo albums ('Alone Together', 'Headkeeper', 'It's Like You Never Left' and 'Dave Mason') are certainly worthy. 'Alone Together' deserves the remastered/expanded treatment accorded many of its 1970 peers.

Of course, Mr. Mason was also a founding member of Traffic, and their first two albums are commonly-acknowledged classics. And in their current remastered and expanded configurations, present tidy little bargains.

Great CD. Dave Mason is so under-rated and unknown to many people, but he does have his fans, of which I am one. Each song was a hit (hence the title of the CD), and I enjoy listening to all of them. And he's been "around" for such a long period of time. His career has spanned many years.

HASH(0x8f09f414) out of 5 stars Definitely worth the bargain basement price 11 Aug. 2005

This is early Dave Mason, so no track will be found from "Let It Flow", what I consider his best album. But this CD itself is a treat, and definitely worth the price.

HASH(0x8e8f92ac) out of 5 stars Dave Mason The Very Best Of (1CD): 10 songs covering only his Blue Thumb label era (1968 – 1972); no Columbia hits. 21 Mar. 2016

CONTENT:

“The Very Best of Dave Mason”, released by MCA Special Products from US in 2003, contains 10 songs, covering only his early Blue Thumb label era from 1968 – 1972. I have compiled a detailed song listing, including singles label & number, chart position, year of release, plus personal comments (BB200=Billboard Album Chart; BB Pop=Billboard Hot 100):

01 ONLY YOU KNOW AND I KNOW (Blue Thumb BLU 114)(a-side)(BB Pop 42/August 1970)*from album “ALONE TOGETHER” (Blue Thumb BTS 19)(BB200 22/1970)
02 PEARLY QUEEN (Blue Thumb BTA 209)(b-side, 1972)*a-side “To Be Free” not included here; from album “HEADKEEPER” (Blue Thumb BTS 34)(1972)
03 JUST A SONG (Blue Thumb 7122)(b-side, 1971)*from album “ALONE TOGETHER” (Blue Thumb BTS 19)(BB200 22/1970)
04 WORLD IN CHANGES (Blue Thumb BLU 112)(uncharted a-side, April 1970)*first single on Blue Thumb label; from album “ALONE TOGETHER” (Blue Thumb BTS 19)(BB200 22/1970)
05 SAD AND DEEP AS YOU (Blue Thumb BLU 114)(b-side, 1970)*from album “ALONE TOGETHER” (Blue Thumb BTS 19)(BB200 22/1970)
06 SHOULDN’T HAVE TOOK MORE THAN YOU GAVE (Blue Thumb 7117)(b-side, 1970)*a-side “Satin Red And Black Velvet Woman” not included here, not available on CD, but available online; from album “ALONE TOGETHER” (Blue Thumb BTS 19)(BB200 22/1970)
07 CAN’T STOP WORRYING, CAN’T STOP LOVING (Blue Thumb BLU 112)(b-side, 1970)*from album “ALONE TOGETHER” (Blue Thumb BTS 19)(BB200 22/1970)
08 HEADKEEPER*from album “IT’S LIKE YOU NEVER LEFT” (Columbia KC 31721)(BB200 50/1973)
09 WAITIN' ON YOU (Blue Thumb 7122)(uncharted a-side, January 1971)
10 FEELIN’ ALRIGHT*from album “HEADKEEPER” (Blue Thumb BTS 34)(1972)

POSITIVE POINTS:

1 If you are solely looking for his output on Blue Thumb label (from 1968 – 1972), I have compared various similar sets and found that this set is best in terms of contents and cheap price. Other similar sets that I compared include (1) “Definitive Collection” (Hip-O Records, 2005, very expensive), (2) “Ultimate Collection” (Hip-O Records, 1999, very expensive), and (3) twofer “Alone Together/Headkeeper” (BGO, 2005, more reasonable price). They are all much higher than the current set.
2 The sound is acceptable.

NEGATIVE POINTS:

1 The title “Very Best” is misleading, because Dave Mason’s biggest and most well-known hits are on Columbia Records label, like his biggest hit “We Just Disagree.”
2 Only 10 songs. In that era, the following songs are missing:
(1) Jut For You (Island WIP 6032)(uncharted a-side, February 1968)*his first single
(2) Little Woman (Island WIP 6032)(b-side, 1968)
(3) Satin Red And Black Velvet Woman (Blue Thumb 7117)(a-side)(BB Pop 97/November 1970)
(4) A Heartache, A Shadow, A Lifetime (I'll Be Home)(Blue Thumb BTA 205)(uncharted a-side, December 1971)
(5) To Be Free (Blue Thumb BTA 209)(a-side)(BB Pop 121/April 1972)

FINAL THOUGHTS:

If you are looking for his early output, this set with cheap price and reasonably good sound is recommended. Again, please don’t be misled by the title.

This is a great CD! I bought it for my brother-in-law along with tickets to go see him the other night. It was great concert and we thoroughly enjoyed him. He is still going strong at 70 years old!
