It really helps that many tasty 'lollipops' from classical pieces are included, including work by Satie, Bach (Air in D) Beethoven (Moonlight Sonata), Albinoni (Adagio), Mozart, Handel (Sarabande), Puccini, Grieg (Morning Mood), Debussy (Clair de Lune) & Vaughan Williams (Greensleeves). Real plums from more modern composers include Barber's haunting Adagio, Pachelbel's melancholy Canon, Myers' Cavatina, and Nyman's romantic The Heart Asks Pleasure First. On top of that we have extracts from film scores such as Gladiator (Hans Zimmer), The Mission (Morricone), Braveheart (Horner) and Edward Scissorhands (Elfman).
There are some unexpected treats here too, such as the wonderfully rich 'Gloria' from The Monks of Silos and Secret Garden's 'Nocturne'. Though recordings age from 1958 to 2002, both sound quality and performances are very good (I know from bitter previous experience about the disappointment of inferior recordings from second division orchestras). In fact, the oldest recording here (Puccini's 'Un Bel Di') features an absolutely scorching, heart-stoppingly beautiful performance by Renata Tebaldi: really superb, but far from a 'chilled classic'.
So, if you'd like to stick a toe in the water of classical music, this is a very decent starter, with plenty of familiar stuff to keep you hooked, and at some great bargain prices from some sellers, though even at full price there's masses of very good music for your outlay.
