Bobby Womack or the Poet as he later became known is one of the classic Soul Artists. From his original forages in Music working as a session guitarist and song writer for the likes of Wilson Picket, Ray Charles and the fabulous Aretha Franklyn, he found success in his own right with the release of his first hit - "What Is This" in 1968, from here his reputation grew as he became one of the greatest Soul artists of his generation.
With the release of Tarantino's Jackie Brown - Bobby was brought to the attention of an entire new spectrum of fans who had missed out on him the first time round as "Across 110th Street" (seen previously on the film of the same name), was chosen for the title track. This song in itself is almost justification for the purchase of this album but when combined with the other tracks from the raspy voiced poet himself, the likes of "I can Understand It", "Gotta Get You Back" and "Communication" then one gets a whole plethora of classic tracks.
"Woman's Gotta Have It" is a fantastic track and Bobby's first number one hit and is a warning to any man taking his woman for granted. For me the culmination of the album comes with the best version of The Mammas and The Papas original track "California Dreamin'" which is unbelievably funky - you have to hear it to believe it.
If you like Soul then this album is for you.

This is a fantastic collection of early Bobby Womack songs.

As the guitarist for Sam Cooke, a songwriter for Wilson Pickett, a guest artist on Sly Stone's album "There's a Riot Going On", Bobby Womack has a special place in the history of soul.

But he was much more than a sideman. he was a captivating artist in his own right as this CD proves.

If you buy this, seek out The Poet next to hear what Womack was doing in the early eighties.

This older compilation has the edge over the 2008 one entitled The Very Best of Bobby Womack - The Soul Years, although given how cheap that one is you might as well get that too, despite the inevitable overlap of tunes. Some of the great tunes which that one misses, but this one has, include: What Is This?, If You Don't Want My Love, Gotta Get You Back and You're Messing Up A Good Thing. All of the songs on this compilation feel like essential tracks, but there are a few debatable inclusions on the more recent CD.

Replacement for a worn out original. Need I say more? A CD collection is not complete without at least two big Bobby Womack albums.
