The early 1950's was a golden era for great recordings by great conductors and singers particularly from 1953 to 1956. In that period we had four great Maria Callas recordings - Tosca with De Sabata (1953), Norma with Serafin (1954), La Traviata with Giulini and Lucia Di Lammermoor with Karajan (1955). We also had Pagliacci (with Bjorling) conducted by Renato Cellini (1953), Der Rosenkavalier with Erich Kleiber (1954), The Flying Dutchman with Hans Knappertsbusch (1955) and La Boheme with Sir Thomas Beecham (1956).

To that roster we can now add the Verdi Messa da Requiem conducted by Victor De Stabata, recorded in June 1954. This old HMV Columbia recording has be restored and re-issued on the NAXOS Historical label. This re-issue also serves as a very timely testament to the late, great soprano Elisabeth Schwarzkopf.

Victor De Stabata had an unrivalled reputation in both operatic and symphonic repertoire as an impassioned and dynamic interpreter, particularly of Verdi and Wagner. This dynamism shows through in this recording as does his operatic background. What is perhaps more surprising is the expansive tempos which facilitates expressive singing from all the soloists and chorus.

When compared to the 1964 recording of the Verdi Requiem conducted by Carlo Maria Giulini, which also features Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, the timing for most passages are consistently more expansive. E.g. (Giulini) Lacrymosa 6.31 - (De Sabata) Lacrymosa 7.14, (Giulini) Requiem aeternam 5.34 - (De Sabata) Requiem aeternam 6.36. Against this the Dies Irae is pushed through in dramatic fashion without seeming rushed. (Guilini 3.06 - De Sabata 2.13).

If you like Italian Grand Opera then this is for you. There is nothing wrong with the recording or the service from the supplier. I bought it based on a review saying that this was the definitive version. It may well be - but I detest he sound of Italian Opera choruses. To me, with all the separate vibrato in the part voices it sounds as if they are gargling, and everyone taking part in the chorus seems to think they are solo Bel Cante singers.
I should have given a little thought before I purchased it. If I had, I would have chosen a version with English Soloists and Chorus, even if it does sound different to what the Composer intended.

I enjoy this recording very much. It's a good version IMHO and such a gorgeous piece of music - I actually have two - one for the house and one for the car....
