Product Description

FALLA (orch. Berio). Siete canciones populares espafiolas. VERDI (arr. Berio). 8 ROMANZE. Jose Carreras (ten); English Chamber Orchestra / Luciano Berio. Philips 0 (D 432 889-2PH (44 minutes: DDD). Texts and translations included. Romanze-In solitaria stanza; II poveretto; mistero; L'esule; Deh pietoso, oh addolorata; II tramonto; Ad una stella; Brindisi. Except for three of the Verdi songs, everything here has previously been recorded by Carreras with the original piano accompaniments, played by Martin Katz (the Falls on Philips (0411 4782PH, 12/85, the Verdi on Sony Classical (D CD45813, 9/90). I didn't much care for the rubatos and ritardandos introduced into the Falla then, but now, using the stylish orchestrations Berio made for Cathy Berberian (with splendidly savage rhythmic punctuations in the "Polo", and only a tam-tam in the "Seguidilla murciana" seeming inappropriate), the results are much more acceptable. Admittedly Carreras takes the "Jota" very freely and still drags out the "Asturiana" at the expense of the line, but otherwise these are satisfying performances except for some under-the-note intonation in the "Nana". Carreras's previous Verdi selection (mostly from the 1838 and 1845 sets) was greeted with dismay by J BS, who also commented on the "exceptionally boring accompaniments". Well, at least that charge can't be levelled against these versions, which are a playground for Berio to "comment on the original text with discreet thematic proliferation or with harmonic transformations

Most likely my favorite Carerras album. These songs allow Senor Carerras to show a depth of emotion in his singing like few others. Well worth owning.
