Fame as one of soap opera's greatest stars never changed her, she remained as down-to-earth, humble and kind as she ever was, and this comes shining through every page of this warm and witty memoir.
In 'Vera Duckworth: My Story', published in 1993, Liz looked back at thirty years in cabaret, television and movies. She recalls hilarious behind the scenes stories whilst filming the 'Street', and memories of working with her screen husband Bill Tarmey that will surely delight any fan of 'Coronation Street' in it's golden age. She also takes us back to her show business routes in working men's clubs as a successful singer and comedienne. She was spotted by film director Alan Parker who cast her for a TV commercial, Liz was an instant success, and roles in a string of television shows and plays followed, working with comedy greats like Les Dawson and Larry Grayson, but all of this is for her to tell you in her own words.
Unlike a lot of celebrity memoirs, Liz's book isn't at all 'trashy', she respects her piracy and reveals no juicy gossip, aside from briefly touching upon her affair whilst married that was reported in the press at the time, and the strain that the media attention once had on her life. Instead, you have a gentle account of a great career, as well as an insight into her childhood, her real life marriage, her children, and her endless work for charity.
It's very sad to hear that Liz is so unwell these days, Vera Duckworth was the heart of soul of 'Coronation Street' and she will never be forgotten. Buy this book, it was a joy to read.
