This fan is very quiet at the low speed setting, even at the high speed setting it's still a great deal quieter than my old fan. Fitting it was easy, although you do have to change a wire if you want the higher speed. Having tried both speeds, I opted for the higher speed as I wanted a greater volume of air to be extracted. The timer was easy to set with a small bladed screwdriver.

My experience of this extractor fan is exactly what I expected. When you install it you have two ways wire it, either for silent running, or making more noise but with more oomph - sucking out more air from your bathroom. I think it is reasonable to describe the silent mode as silent. If you put your head next to it then you can hear it, but really under normal use conditions you don't know it's on. However, the amount of air extracted on silent running is just too weak. And this brings you to the real question about this fan. When you wire it to extract an acceptable amount of air how noisy is it? The answer is simple - less noisy than a standard fan. On this evidence alone it's a sensible purchase. I think a good description would be "fairly quiet".

What else is there to say? Well firstly, I was able to install this fan myself. I installed the one that it replaced, which was a Vent Axia I bought about 5 years ago that itself replaced a no-name-brand fan that was excessively noisy. The old Vent Axia was noisy but effective. You could hear it throughout about half the house when it went on. This new silent fan you can only hear inside the bathroom. You can't even hear it when you stand outside the bathroom with the door shut. All of these fans have had easily understandable wiring that is clearly marked and described in the instructions. One slightly tricky thing was that on my old Vent Axia the three mains wires (marked L, LS and N) were in a different order, but fortunately senility hasn't set in to such a point where I'm unable to contend with a minor difference like this.

Finally, it's built to a reasonable standard. The plastic is very thin, but you never touch them when in use so I guess this doesn't make any difference.

I think this is an excellent product - really hard to hear; it is worth getting this one with the timer and making it come on with the bathroom light. You will never hear it (unless you are very young) and the air in your bathroom will always be fresh!

I agree with the reviews of other purchasers - the fan is very quiet even at the higher speed and seem to extract air efficiently. However, on initial installation, I found that there is a 10 or 12 second delay in the fan starting to work when the bathroom light is switched on. There is no reference to this in the fitting instructions so I contacted Vent-Axia by email to enquire about it in case this was indicative of a defect. Their customer service adviser informed me that the fan should start instantly so I returned it to Amazon for a refund and bought another one locally at a higher price. On installation, the new one did exactly the same so I contacted Vent-Axia again; this time, the Product Manage has advised that the delay is, in fact, a normal feature of this model. So, purchasers please be aware that this is not a defect - and Amazon, please accept my apologies for putting you and your supplier to the trouble and expense of taking back a non-defective item.

I bought the VentAxia Silent Fan for a small shower room (about 6m sq). As it's an ensuite, the 'quietest fan on the market' sounded appealing. It's fairly easy to wire up and adjust, and the first of the two settings is indeed very quiet - so much so that my electrician left it running without realizing after he installed it. The downside is that this setting is absolutely useless for extraction: running it for 30 minutes after the shower was turned off doesn't clear the steam or even make a significant difference. I now have it on the second setting, which improves the extraction rate a little. The downside is that on this setting it's not much quieter than a standard extractor, and doesn't perform any better. To sum up, you have to choose between 'Silent' and 'Fan': you don't get both together.

Delivered on time as arranged. Vent was as described. Easy to install with minimum tools. Very quiet when in use. Would recommend the product and the vendor.

I am giving the fan a single star because I am really annoyed with the "Silent" claim and the marketing that surrounds this claim. Silent means that you can't hear something. I have the fan set to the slow speed and I can assure you that the fan is not silent by any stretch of the imagination. It is only marginally less quiet than the fan I replaced. The fan is mounted in the ceiling of my bedroom en-suite and when I lie on my bed the fan can be heard loud and clear. I am just waiting for the darn thing to turn itself off on the timer to experience actual silence. I have noticed that the "silent" claim is also being abused with PCs which in fact sport quite noisy fans. I guess the manufactureres all know it is a lie but that no regulatory body is pulling them up on it so they all do it to compete with one another. I am not impressed but having now installed it I can't be bothered to return it which is just what the manufacturers hope will happen!

I think the only way to achieve anything like silence would be to have a remote fan in the loft mounted away from the ceiling which is fed via large diameter ducting with very smooth surfaces and which runs at quite a low speed. Some hotels have this type of extraction (many don't!) This fan has none of the latter features though.
