This Venom Quad Charging Station is powered by USB and can be connected to your Switch’s TV Dock with the supplied USB Type-C cable (there’s two USB ports at the front and another one under the flap on the side where the HDMI cable goes). You can of course also plug it into a USB port on a computer, or one of those little USB charging plugs. Better still, you can also use the cable separately to charge up your Switch if you’re away from the Switch’s TV Dock for longer periods of time - I had been meaning to pick a spare USB Type-C cable for this very purpose, so this handy little dock has solved two of my problems at once. Recommended.
The charging unit is made of sturdy plastic and has easily visible charging lights on top, showing when the joycons are connected. They slide on and off easily, although not quite as smoothly as on the console, and lock in place with a clearly audible click. The dock is powered by a type-c cable, same as used to charge the Switch, and can be connected to the dock USB ports. No wall plug is provided but the type-c cable is, and I'm sure everyone has a USB charging plug lying around somewhere. The unit is as intuitive to use as it can be, utilising the same locking mechanism as all Switch users are used to.
So, whilst this isn't an essential purchase, it is very useful if you have two sets of controllers, or like me enjoy the convenience of controller charging away from the Switch console. Highly recommended.
Why? Because when you connect your Joy Cons to your Switch it will charge them while docked and charge them up to 50% when mobile so it doesn't drain the console battery.
With about 20 hours battery life Joy Cons are some of the most hardcore controllers for what they are - wireless controllers. It takes a serious amount of gaming to run them down.
So what's the point of this dock? You're a SERIOUS e-sports player, a massively mobile multiplayer at Mario Kart or you're trying to complete Zelda in one sitting!
The dock build is similar plastic to the Switch dock which means it also feels budget, but sturdy enough, and matches the colour scheme and aesthetics.
It's powered with a standard USB to USB C cable, so you can charge off your Switch dock ports, or stick it into a phone cable adapter and power off the wall.
They Joy Cons slide and click in, though not as smooth as to your Switch unit. There's no damage to your Joy Con, it's just not as smooth.
The biggest advantage for me is the free USB C cable - the same cable used to charge your Switch on the dock. If you happen to have a spare portable battery, you're sorted for gaming and travelling undocked.
For the hardcore casual Switch gamer. No level ups for casual players - you won't need this.
