This is the account of that secret mission, as related by the leader of the group -- the first Mossad agent to come out of "deep cover" and tell the story of a heroic endeavor that was shrouded in silence and speculation for years. He reveals the long and dangerous operation whose success was bought at a terrible cost to the idealistic volunteer agents themselves.
"Avner" was the leader of that team, handpicked by Golda Meir to avenge the monstrous crime of Munich. He and his young companions, cut off from any direct contact with Israel, set out systematically to find and kill the central figures of the PLO's Munich operation, tracking them down wherever they lived.
The mechanics, the horror, the day-by-day suspense of what they did surpass by far anything John le Carré or Robert Ludlum could imagine, as they themselves were tracked in turn (and some killed) by PLO assassins, changing identities constantly, moving from country to country, devoting their young lives to the brutal task of vengeance.
Vengeance is a profoundly human document, a real-life espionage classic that plunges the reader into the shadow world of terrorism and political murder. But it goes far beyond that, to explore firsthand the feelings of disgust and doubt that gradually came to torment each member of the Israeli team, and that in the end inexorably changed their view of the mission -- and themselves.
Vengeance opens a window onto a secret world, a book that at the same time inspires and horrifies. For its subject is an act of revenge that goes to the very heart of the ancient biblical questions of good and evil.

As the author points out in the prologue, much of Avner's testimony is uncorroborated, which is not surprising given the nature of the operation and the fact that only two of the team survived.
Is the film close to the book? Not entirely. Many of the film's major plot elements do occur in the book, but a lot of details in the film are made up, while other incidents such as the shooting of three Black September members in a Swiss church are omitted entirely. You really need to read the book if you want to find out what actually happened.
These events have of course been written about elsewhere, but this book is probably unmatched for factual accuracy and the level of detail provided.
This dark period of history is covered remarkably well in the 2006 Spielberg film 'Munich', which took this book's material as its basis. Viewers who liked the film however will be surprised by the book, given that it lacks the sensitivity or moral self-questioning seen in Spielberg's work. In its place we instead have a tone of complete moral superiority and a total failure to engage with the key questions (e.g. Is it right for established nation states to pursue a policy based on revenge? Where is the justice in the multiple innocent deaths caused by this policy? Were in fact all the 'legitimate' targets of 'wraith of god' actually involved in terrorism?).
This is seen by comparing sections with the film. For example, in the final scene of Spielberg's film where 'Avner' debates the rights of wrongs of state sanctioned revenge (and by implication whether it is in fact crossed over into official 'state sanctioned terrorism') with his Mossad handler in NYC, with the twin towers in the backdrop, standing as a shadow over everything and acting as grim representation of the future. In the book apparently the real conversation was not about high moral principle, but instead the status of Avner's back pay!(Mossad owed him $100,000, which they were not keen to hand over)
It is truly amazing a good film could come from such a poor book. While it is tempting to read it just for this kind of insight (I give it 2 stars as it could be useful as a cultural product for academic study), I would say that if you liked the film, you'll hate the book.
If on the other hand you think you would like a bizarrely un-selfcritical, black and white vision of an anti-terrorist campaign told like a slightly high-brow version of Tom Clancy novel (despite the fact it relates to the deaths of dozens of actual human beings), then pick up a copy.
