The story is split into two parts past and present - before and after Grayson McKendrick - her history professor.
Addison Lancaster - ingénue or Siren? The first time he heard her name he knew he was in trouble and it began the day she stepped into his classroom late. She looked at him - he looked at her. His ending staring right at him.
Temptation - he gave into it. She was his own personal sin and he fell.
I loved what Ella Frank has done with this story She has created a magical story bringing together the modern version of Cupid and Psyche. The forbidden love, the fairy story with the monsters.
It peels back the complexities of human thinking and feelings and how it centred on Grayson and Adddison’s struggle to reach that happy ending. For me there was nothing illicit about their love. It was pure and in the end all their pain, sorrow and challenges align and eventually their love is realized.
What is done out of Love always takes place beyond good and evil”
And that’s all I am going to say - this is a must read.
The positives for the book were:
1. The story had alternating POV's, which for me, always works much better with these genre of books.
2. The ending was sweet and nicely concluded. No loose ends. No cliffhanger.
The negatives were:
1. Despite my understanding of the reason for the constant reference to sound of a clock -'Tick, Tick, Tock' - which was to help reinforce Addison's OCD with regards to time, I felt the author's usage of the description extremely irritating. Even Grayson was described as hearing the 'Tick, Tick, Tock' of a clock in a couple of chapters - and he didn't even have OCD!!!
2. Grayson and Addison never had an overwhelming chemistry that leapt off the page. Again, the manner in which their relationship was depicted, pivoted between OK and good, but never quite reaching the (literary) heights to make a lasting impression.
.... Wasn't bad, but wasn't great.
“Temptation had come to visit, and her steely determination would likely destroy us both.”
There are a few authors where no matter what they write I read it; I know that I am going to get a good book so I don’t even bother reading the blurb. This is one of those authors and one of those books. I totally went into this book blind and I am glad I did. As soon as I started reading and suddenly realised that this was going to be a student/teacher book I was excited. This is one of the genres that I love to read. We all love the forbidden romance aspect; the fact that it is deemed so wrong immediately piques my interest and gets my brain going into overdrive. We all had crushes on one teacher or another at school, but what would have happened if you actually acted upon them and the feelings were mutual? The possibilities are endless, invariably they never end well, but you cannot help who you fall in love with, if fate intended for it to happen, it will happen. I just sat back reading and enjoyed the ride.
“No, Addison. Just perfectly imperfect. None of us are perfect.”
Addison is one of “the popular” girls who makes sure that she excels at everything she does, but she is far from happy. This is all part of the “Addison” façade, she pushes herself to her limits in the vain attempt at getting love and acceptance from her parents. If she could be the best, perhaps her parents would learn to like and love her again, maybe they could be proud, maybe just maybe life could go back to the way it was, but that is a pipe dream. Addison is OCD, she has her little rituals, she constantly counts and constantly listens to her watch…tick tick tock.Read more ›
Addison is 18, beautiful but with a troubled past. Greyson is her 32-year-old history teacher.
The narrative switched between past and present, so you know from the outset that their affair had not stayed secret, but the extent of that was revealed gradually. Sometimes it can make a story hard to read when you know they're heading for certain disaster, but this was a compelling and engrossing read in spite of that.
The sex scenes in this were off the scale - the whole forbidden affair thing was used to great effect to make the sex scenes scorching hot.
I was dreading the ending but actually it was my favourite part of this story.
I'll definitely be reading more from this author, it was a fantastic read. If you like a challenging love story with white hot sex scenes you'll love this. Recommended.
