At last this writer has drawn on past criticisms and created a really good book. The first few chapters were absolutely captivating. It is a combination of thriller and borders on the fantasy realms just slightly, which will make it interesting for readers who steer clear of the supernatural books. The main character is hitchhiking and gets into the truck of a friendly lorry driver or so she thinks, whilst drugged and tied up she starts hearing voices. I really enjoyed it, there was just enough excitement, mystery and not too much bedroom tango to deflect from the story and that pinch of the unknown to create a great read.

This book was a bit different from the usual murders/thrillers that I read.

Anna is an orphan and doesn't realize she is related to a group of people (Lake People)
who can communicate with each other by telepathy. She also doesn't realize that Gabriel
is her "soul mate", though he is aware of it.
When Gabriel and other Lake People rescue her from a life threatening situation and take her
home, she has to try and discover the truth about her parents and learn how to use her special powers
of telepathy. Not all the Lake People are happy to see her or want to help her uncover secrets they would prefer
to stay secret.

I didn't guess "the baddie" and I liked the way the relationship developed between feisty,
independent Anna and Gabriel, who is annoyed by her seeming indifference to him.

In the small town of Unknown, Louisiana, there lives a large family with golden eyes and black hair. They have secrets they are unwilling for outsiders to discover, but how far would they go to protect those secrets?

Abandoned as a baby, Anna has a clue to her family history, but her plans to uncover more are hampered when she is drugged and kidnapped by a serial killer. She believes her mental communications with an angry and frantic sounding man to be a result of the drugs, but she still mentally recites any clues she can uncover as to her whereabouts.

Gabriel has received mental images of the woman he loves throughout his life, but as he waits for her to come to him he grows resentful and angry, unaware that he has connected with Anna who has no knowledge of the abilities found in her family; yes she too has black hair and golden eyes.

Anna is soon caught up in the mystery of her parentage, the strange powers her family reveal and the knowledge that someone will kill to guard their secrets. Although there isn't as much romance as I anticipated, "Veiled Eyes" is an exciting paranormal thriller that starts with a bang, introduces an unexpected twist that took me totally by surprise and finishes with a tense action filled finale. Book 2 of this series; "Disembodied Bones", will definitely be added to my TBR pile.

Very well written and plotted, it's a really gripping novel which was only spoilt a little for me by the masses of riddles that start each chapter - I quickly learned to simply skip over them as they're absolutely not necessary to read in full, and get back into the story. The characters are well drawn and likeable - or "dis-likeable" as the case may be! - and as soon as I'd finished this first in the series I bought the next, which was very different and just as good. I'm off to begin the 3rd one now. Recommended.

This book takes you in from the first chapter and is a cross between a thriller/suspense with a touch of the paranormal added in for good measure.

You feel for the female lead as she tries to figure out who she is and find out about her past. There is a romantic link between her and the main leading man but this in no way overshadows the suspense, probably because she calls him "Mr Grabby Hands" and doesn't particularly like him although she is drawn to him. He in turn is frustrated and irritated by her.

The other characters in this are believable but there is just enough of the suspense in every page so you are wondering if everyone is just as they seem.

A book that I didn't want to put down or finish but also couldn't wait to see how it ended.

Loved it.

A run of bad luck drives Anna St Thais to hitchhike towards New Orleans. She is used to reading people's intentions quite well which she puts down to hunches. Despite her efforts to pick a safe ride she ends up in the cab with a serial killer truck driver. While drugged and terrified she finds she is communicating with Gabriel Bergeron, one of the Lake people. The race to save Anna is described from Gabriel and Anna's point of view and CL Bevill keeps the tension up. Then we find out that Anna, who was left at an orphanage as a baby, must be from the Lake people as her telepathic abilities and physical appearance are clear indicators of her origins. But who are her parents and why is her search for knowledge dangerous? Anna and Gabriel have to sort out their relationship under these strains. CL Bevill describes the Lake People convincingly and makes Anna a strong heroine who you would like at your side in a tough situation. The romance is not over done and has some nice twists and turns. I got it as a freebie but would be willing to pay for this one.
